The short answer is that, if you try to hit the ball at the target and the center of your Shot Zone is 5 yards right with that club, you should be aiming 5 yards left to center your shot pattern around your intended target (which isn't often the hole, but more often the middle of the fairway, or the left-center of the fairway if there's a pond to the right, or the middle of the green regardless of hole locations etc.).

Awesome. Okay here's the really important question then do you have any tips on depth perception to be able to kind of gauge where that middle is given as closer distances are going to appear differently than ones that are further away.

I'm not sure I understand the question or what depth perception has to do with it.

If you hit a bunch of balls toward a target, and you come up 4 yards short and 5 yards right, your intent is to hit the ball 4 yards long and 5 yards left. You can measure the depth with a laser or GPS.

The "aiming five yards left" you just… estimate where that is. A flagstick is often about seven feet or just over two yards tall.

Sorry it may just be trial and error.  I understand the idea of short and long distance control but am trying figure out how to measure the left right because a pw distance is going to be way easier to judge than a 200 yd drive.  I could walk it off left right of target and aim at that target line . That's my best guess.

Hold a finger out and measure how wide it is at 25 yards. It'll be 4x that distance at 100 yards, 6x at 150, and 8x at 200.

Kinda like AimPoint.

Brilliant idea.  Thanks as an aimpoint user that is the answers.

Tried this yesterday and worked pretty good all told.  I had my best tee to green round of the year.  Everything but my putting was operating at a 15hcp level from my usual 23.

    • Day 126: another busy day, so just did some mirror work. Checking set up and backswing and working on a few downswing feels.
    • Day 310 - Working on my follow-through. Higher chest, belt towards the target. Small swings at first, building to a fuller swing (still not thrilled with my short backswing).
    • Day 201 (19 Nov 24) - Walked the back nine at Minnesott today, played the “white” tees with the persimmon woods and bladed irons.  It’s a challenge I really like as the clubs are shorter in overall distances.  It really forces me focus on the value of the approach game.     Somehow yesterday’s post did not load / so it’s above.  Today (Day 202) I did some backyard short yardage work - 7i dink  and rolls, 9i chips and 50deg pitches - working to get it in before the rain started around noon.
    • Day 51 - 2024-11-20 Played nine holes of Sanctuary Moon with a 6I while pausing in the backswing and otherwise just practicing. If you're into Star Wars, or don't actively hate it… this is worth checking out.
