This was a real eye opener for me to see so many PROS deciding against using driver to play it safe.

I think Tiger was using a 3I while others used a 3W on many holes.

I am thinking it was 1998 US Open @ Olympic.

Is that known to be a narrow course?

I wish I could see Teebox highlights of players not using driver.

Olympic is on the side of a hill, so the fairwasy have a lot of right to left and left to right pitch.  Placement of the tee shot was critical.

Reminds me of teebox strategy for the International, a one-time tournament called played from 1986 to 2007 at Castle Pines GC in the mountains of Colorado.

The pros regularly used 3W off the tee. Due to the high altitude and frequent plunging tee shots, the 3W often carried longer than a Driver.

At Augusta National, No. 10 offers a similar situation. The hole drops 108 feet from tee to green, and many players find they get a longer carry with a 3W hitting the downslope, than a driver hitting a flatter area farther out.

Focus, connect and follow through!
