Titleist AP1 714 irons

In my adventures of looking for a putter which has all but ended, I was walking past the hitting bays at the local Golfsmith. They had some Titleist AP1's in the demo barrel so I decided to hit them. Man did they feel good! I hit them for a good 10 min as the store was slow and the manager came over and was talking to me as well. (Need to fix my out to in swing). The question is, how are these different from my current irons, Mizuno JPX 800HD's? Are the AP1's considered an upgrade to what I have? Are they forgiving or more like a "players" iron? I am planning on getting fitted in the next couple weeks but wasn't really looking to changing irons this year.....

The AP1s are a little more of a players iron than the JPX.  The JPX 800HDs have the two hybrids and will launch a bit higher.  they also have a wider sole and would be more forgiving on fat shots.  However, the AP1s are very good clubs.

I love my AP1s.  They are a game improvement type club, but I suppose geared somewhat toward the more serious player.  They have less offset than a lot of GI class clubs, and they are contoured so as to minimize the look of the offset that is there.  But they still have a sort of chunky topline like all GI clubs which seems to bother some folks.  I don't really notice/worry about it.

I don't have experience with the Mizunos, but I know they make top quality clubs; so whether the AP1s would be an upgrade is a question I won't delve into.  However, if you're thinking of shopping for AP1s, I would strongly urge you to look at Titleist's web site and see if there is an Advanced fitting center anywhere near you.  Not all fittings are the same...

"Are they forgiving or more like a "players" iron?" Little confused on this question. Blades (MB) or even CB and AP2 can be considered players clubs, but AP1? They are a game improvement club. And a very good one at that. So yes, they are the most forgiving offering from Titleist (and best selling) but no, not truly a players iron (however Ben Curtis does play them) so they are whatever you want them to be..
