If I were you, I'd wish I lived in a state where those lunatics weren't allowed to carry to "protect themselves."

Lunatics are all around us. Look at the person next to you, does he/she not look right?

LOL, that is clever!!!

Why so defensive??  What makes you automatically assume that since I think it's silly to argue this topic again that I am on the opposite side of it?

Well, to start with this was not a 2nd amendment debate. I was stating facts about two tragic shooting that took place very close to me. Never said you were on the opposite side. If you think the subject matter is silly, you don't have to comment you can just change the channel.

I agree.  Because nobody would have a gun, including the lunatic.  Nothing to stop.

I'm the tin foil hat wearing weirdo who thinks that we need guns to protect us from the government, not the crazy guy next door.  If we restrict guns, the crazy guy doesn't have them either.  But the government still does.  So it really only gives you a comparative disadvantage vis a vis the government, while likely protecting you from the crazy person.

I think the "crazy" guy will find/get a gun regardless of the law.

If guns were made illegal today you think no one would have a gun ? Criminals don't obey laws. It would only take guns away from honest people.

I see your tin foil hat and raise you my bullet proof vest.

Yup.

Where I live, Maryland, and where I work, DC, you need a permit and can only get one upon a showing of good cause.  In DC, that's the new law passed because the flat out ban was struck down.

I actually support the right to bear arms, but for completely different reasons.  I just think these "protect myself" from the lunatic arguments are bunk.  If a guy walked into your office to kill you, you likely would never have a chance.  Maybe in the context of a mass shooting, but I don't think we've ever seen a private carrying citizen stop one of those, either.

Eh.  The guy is a cop, and the attacker was a lady with a knife who cut one person's head off.  I don't think that qualifies.

The shooter was a CEO of a company. And a reserve deputy. The attacker was not a lady, don't see where that matters anyhow.

What does qualify ? I bet it has to be very specific.

It qualifies for me, bravo! to the armed citizen for stepping in and preventing more bloodshed.

You've never heard about it, because the liberal media would never report it.  It has happened, http://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanhatesthis/10-potential-mass-shootings-that-were-stopped-by-someone-wit#dp3t61

I personally believe that to qualify as stopping a mass shooting, there should be (1) a shooting; and (2) multiple deaths or threatened individuals..  But that's fine, take the victory.  1 of the last 39358590 gun deaths has now been prevented.  Seems effective.

The more interesting question is why all of sudden all these people are killing others when they get fired.

I stand corrected.  10 out of 39358590.  How do we count shootouts between rival gangs?

Neither of the shootings that happened this week were mass shootings. First one, two people were killed, second, one person was killed.

But you can spin it any way you want.

All the sudden? This has happened many times throughout my 35 year lifetime. Jeeze, don't you remember the phrase "going postal"?

Disgruntled employees who return to their job, or ex-job, to wreak havoc is definitely nothing new.

Sure, but this is like the third time this week.  And I think only one of them was a postal worker.

you're confusing two different things.  My point about mass shootings was about your claim that they can be stopped by average joe carry, but pointing to an article about a part time cop shooting a guy cutting someone's head off with a knife.  It was neither a shooting, or mass.  The shootings this week, were not stopped by average joe carry.  But I'm not really interested in continuing this anymore.

Since I work with people who work where the Alabama UPS shooting occurred, I was told the fellow had been in a motorcycle wreck and suffered mentally from it. There is a lot to talk about when it comes to mental health support in the general population. Especially with a medical insurance system that cant support you unless you can check a box on a form for a known, specific procedure. I think the medical side has some growing up to do here. Modern medicine being driven by a dollar is understandable. Not having mental health dragnets for those dollars, not so much.

Two workplace shootings in one week. Both seem to have been committed by terminated employees. Both were about ten miles from where I work. As a supervisor that has to terminate employees when necessary myself, I'm glad I live in a state that allows me to carry and protect myself. Believe it or not, there ARE bad people out there.

I suppose it really depends upon how you fire the individuals. It seems like a friendly and cordial agreement that things are not working out would be better than some other way, so it would not invoke some kind of revenge instinct? Even if you do carry a gun, the vengeful ex-employee would have the "draw on you". He picks the time and place, not you. Best to be a good supervisor, and try to be understanding to the needs of your employees even when you need to terminate their position at your company.

Mental health in this country is a joke. It must be all O's fault.

So, we're talking about mental health and carry and conceal in one thread? Not sure I like the direction it's headed. . .

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
