Year end deals

I forgot to post this after Black Friday this year. I stopped at Sports Authority and picked up a couple of wedges. When there, I noticed they had Tommy Armour 845 irons on clearance for $79. This is for 8 irons. You couldn't even touch this price for cheap components. This set has older technology, but was a top seller not that many years ago for 5 times this price. So for anybody looking for a starter set or a Christmas gift for a noob, you can't beat the price. Dick's has some remarkable clearance prices as well. I saw a set of Pink K15 irons for just under $400. These are Ping's most forgiving irons that normally sell for about $800-$1000 for the irons. They cost more than the new G30 irons normally. They have titanium faces which allow more perimeter weighting and wear much better than steel. Plus they make sparks when hit in the sand. :-) I thought about picking up a set just to have them. They have a little more offset than I typically like. They are super game improvement (we could all benefit from that), but I normally draw the ball, so offset irons and me are not friends. This Holiday season, I've picked up a Ping K15 driver, Ping K15 3 wood, Pink K 15 5 wood, Cleveland 4 hybrid, 3 Tommy Armour wedges and a putter for under $350. These aren't cheap knock offs. These are nice quality for a great price. Hope it's not too late and they still have some deals!

Our local Sports Authority relocated from one local mall to another this summer, and picked up quite a bit more overall store space. Also, the new site has about 4 times the floor space devoted to golf.

As before, the new SA golf set-up has a good sized indoor putting green. But, the new SA has no place to actually test-hit clubs. The old site had a 10' x 15' slot where  you could hit balls into a net - provided you could find a sock-sorter to give you permission to use it.

Neither the old nor new SA did any fittings or club repair.

I guess I'm not sure what niche SA is pursuing in golfdom.

I'm afraid to go in a golf shop now. I spent nearly $500 on upgrades already this year. I don't NEED any more clubs. But we all WANT more clubs. :-)

I am waiting for the end of year sales. Wasn't too blown away by the sales so far.

What end of year sales? I see the same discounts today that were available last Spring.

The next few months are usually good for used club deals. The selection before Christmas was not to good.

One oddity I did see due to winter boredom was that I can buy a new Big Bertha driver cheaper than a used one as per the Callaway web site.
