So, earlier this year my girlfriend got me a Zepp and for Christmas, her sister got me the original swingbyte. From what I've looked into, it seems they pretty much do the same thing. Am I mistaken about this?

Almost, but not quite. I have both now.

I used and enjoyed the Swingbyte for a while. It's a great device, and gives excellent feedback. I found the numbers to be reasonably accurate. However, at some point last year I put it down and never picked it back up again. In hindsight, the reasons for this were ease of use - it would consistently move around on the club after a few swings ( I had the latest model plus attachments, but I have a steep swing and can jar at impact on mats ) and it was difficult to maintain Bluetooth contact with my phone or iPad. I had to constantly calibrate. I just got frustrated with it.

I got the Zepp a week ago based on reviews ( and a gift card ). So far, I love it. Very easy to clip on the glove, instantly calibrates and connects, and updates on my phone in < 3 seconds. I very much enjoy the 'training aid' piece, which allows me to instantly compare my swing and gives me a score based on how I'm doing to 'ideal' stats for my talent range.

The Swing Byte actually gives you a few more stats - shaft lean, angles at impact, etc. It may be a little more useful for the serious golfer. But the Zepp is far easier to use on the range, especially if you're running through your bag and not hitting the same club over and over. That's the primary difference that I see.

You can also use the Zepp for other sports ( same device, different apps ) if that's useful to you.

TL:DR - A few more stats from the Swingbyte, but Zepp is a little easier to use.

I should mention, the original SwingByte is tough to keep on the club. You may need to send away for additional attachments. The Swingbyte 2 was essentially a stronger clasped version.

However, they're both great and the apps are free. I'm assuming you already opened/use the Zepp and are considering returning the SwingByte - you may as well, since it doesn't do much the Zepp doesn't do.

Yeah, that's my thing, my gf's sister got it for me so I kind of feel bad but it doesn't seem worthwhile to use it since as you correctly assumed, I've opened and used the Zepp.

Maybe I'll sell it and put the money towards a Game Golf.

Also, it's the original swingbyte and like you mentioned, I've read it's not very sturdy on the club.

I created and 3D printed a part that helps it fit more snugly on the shaft. I haven't made it more general for any shaft yet. Just fits my KBS shafts and am going to make one for the woods and drivers when I have some time.

Uh, so I'm outing myself as a gadget freak here, but I absolutely love the Game Golf. Rocking that, the Garmin S1 and the Zepp now. I'm half golfer, half Robocop on the course these days.

I'm totally the opposite. It's just me, the clubs and three balls. I prefer to play more simply, as I have enough gizmos at work with which to contend.

Of course, I sometimes have a 50 pound bag full of goodies. . .

Yah, the only gadgets I use while playing I'd the gps/scorecard on my phone and my rangefinder. But, if I get Game Golf, I'd obviously use it while playing.

    • I've had a couple of good shots since the last time I posted, 1 a 90 yard approach that I manufactured with my gap wedge that I knocked to about 18 inches, 1 a ~140 yard 8 iron that I got to about 3 feet (pictured), but this week my best shot was a 60 yard pitch. It wasn't anything special but I did hit it out of a divot, so that's what I'm more proud of. Plus, i didn't really have any memorable shots this week.
    • Just a  follow up, I had the best lessons ever on gears with the best instructor! Wish I would’ve made the drive earlier in the year but put it together during a golf trip. Gears was incredible to see your swing in 3d with all the necessary data. I’ve had very few formal lessons in the past and a couple online but nothing compared to working with Erik. He made it  very comfortable and relaxed, patient with all my  questions and showed some swing comparisons of pros swings.    Our main focus was getting the pelvis to move in a better pattern and when he first pushed on my hip with that pvc going back it was like a “wow” moment. And to see the affects in real time just made it quicker to adapt and learn how to find it again, however, even without gears I’m sure it would’ve been an awesome lesson..it’s just nice for some players to see the facts, no debate… At the end of the 1st session I was shocked at the video seeing my pelvis move better, hips open, no early extension. I was literally like I can’t believe that video capture is me! I’m glad I had a second session the following morning, just to reinforce the earlier ideas and work on the next piece to complete the movement, and we still had plenty of time to mess around with lower priority ideas for later. I left that afternoon armed with a practice plan, he took extra time to show me what to look for on my own video and I got a copy of LSW. We’ll continue on evolvr for checkups until another road trip for sure! I also just ordered the stack system with his discount code to work on some speed training as well.    Just wanted to share my appreciation for all Erik’s help and anyone finding there way here like I did over the winter to give it a try!
