I'm looking to fill a gap between a 19degree 5 wood and 27 degree 5 iron. Thought about just going 4 iron or a 23 degree hybrid. Thoughts?

You could go with a 23* hybrid instead of the 4i. I don't hit my long irons as good as I hit my hybrids.

Sounds like me, I went with a Cally X2 7 wood and actually am using a 11 wood on a trial basis. Toyed with the idea of a 9 wood as well.  Cally's X2Hot clubs are the real deal.  The 7 wood is my club for 170-80 and 11 wood about 160.  But, its winter and really haven't played the 11 wood in the golf season.  I tried hybrid's and they did not work well for me.

I use a 7W and 23° hybrid to fill that gap.

Beware of old dudes with old clubs and new grips.

Mack H,

What club mix do you carry in your bag? This would help us answer your question.

If you carry a 3W and 5W, you could go with either a 7W or a 4H (often 22° or 23°) to fill the gap. For bridging the longer clubs, some people hit lofted woods better, others hit hybrids better.

Since you have a 0.9 HDCP, how long have you had this 5W-5i gap in your bag?

I do have a 3w 5w and currently use a 24degree driving iron. But thought about the 23degree hybrid be a better fit to fil the gap.

A 23° hybrid might be a bit more versatile than a driving iron.

At your playing ability, the launch characteristics of the shaft would be critical.

I have a 21° 7W and a  22° 4H. The 7W flies longer, but the 4H with a lower-launch Bassara shaft is more reliable in the wind.

Based on practically everyone's comments, I tried 4 different #4 hybrids over the last year and a half, and am back to a 4 iron.    I found out through much trial and tribulation that for me, hybrids are NOT inherently easier to hit than todays modern cavity backed forgiving long irons.   If you're comparing a hybrid against an old muscle back or blade long iron, sure I'm going hybrid all the way ... but we don't have to do that anymore - todays modern cavity backed long irons are fantastic.    I think there's a place for hybrids, but for for me its in the 3 iron slot.   I'm sold on my 4 iron - my mouth practically waters when I see a nice fairway lie 185 yds in ... can't wait to pull that 4i

What yardage gap are you trying to fill? How far do you hit your 5 wood/5 iron?

Definitely go with the #4 Hybrid.........at 23* you can use it for approaches from 175 to 190 yds or you can use it to get out from under the trees.

    • I agree with @dennyjones, a suspension of some meaningful duration would be better than getting bounced from the Tour. They might consider experimenting each week. It might generate a bit of interest. I like the idea of a visible shot clock. If a player and their caddy can’t decide on a strategy and pull the trigger in XX seconds (30? 45? 60?), one stroke penalty. Give each player 2 resets a round. The clock starts when the last player to hit’s ball stops moving. Other pace ideas could be used every couple events until a consensus is reached to adopt or ditch an idea.
