When I'm in the market for a new putter, I've currently narrowed down my choice to the two mentioned in my Tittle:

-Odyssey Black Series #1
-Scotty Cameron Studio Newport 2

Both of these putters have been critically acclaimed in various publications. I probably can't go wrong with either one.

Can someone explain the subtle differences between them and their experiences with either or both of them?

i agree you probabaly cant go wrong with either, the odyssey looks better than the cameron but man those scottys are sweet to putt with. the grip on the black series is sick! and i hate the studio grips but that is a minor detail and can always be changed. at least you already know that you cant go wrong, be confident no matter what you decide.

I tried both and thought the ball came off softer and with a purer roll on the Odyssey. Plus, as mentioned before, I think the Odyssey is better looking. Mind you, I have no bias either way as I use the Ping Zing Redwood, which looks and feels best TO ME. They're all similar quality putters, so you should just choose what's most comfortable to you.

My Tools of Ignorance:

Putters: Scotty Cameron  35" (Several of the flow neck blade variety)

Ball: Bridgestone B330-RX and Srixon Z-Star

Bag: Nike Performance Carry

I tried out a SC last night, but not the Studio Newport. I tried out the Newport Detour that they had in the store. What a difference a good putter makes! It just makes a sweet sound when it hits the ball. The ball comes off the putter a lot more crisp and connected to the putter.

My current putter feels muted and bland. Very unpredictable.

Totally agree that you can't go wrong with either one... You can easily change the thin grip on SC so it's not a big problem. I preferred the sound and feel of SC compared to Odyssey Black... My dad uses Odyssey Black so I actually have both of them at home... However, I am really looking forward to trying the upcoming Mizuno Black Carbon Series as well... But my SC Newport 2 will be staying in the bag for a long long time.

Have to admit, the SC Newport 2 is such a beautiful club. But, I can't let the looks sway my decision.

Well, I am very biased...hah, but I have the black series #2 (I liked the squared off look better), and I've never been more confident with a putter in my life. I don't care where I am on the green, I feel like I can easily 2 putt (doesn't always happen, but at least I have the confidence).

I can't comment on a Scotty, as I've never putted with one.

Save yourself some money and go with the Odyssey. Camerons are so overpriced its not even funny. His latest line of putters look so cheap its not even funny. I have putted with numerous camerons and still have yet to find one thats not as good as other putters I have used.
Dont buy your game and go with the Odyssey. Its a great putter and much better feel than the Cameron.

going with the odyssey makes sense on the idea that you want to save $50 but with all of the options that Scotty offers in the anser/newport style. insert or no insert he has a ton of different versions that you can buy. you even have the option of buying a used one and sending it in for resto. check it out www.scottycameron.com

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
