I only have about 6 yrs into this game but have been steadily improving. I am in my late 50's and have a driver swing speed of just over 100mph.I hit all my clubs fairly decent and they are all 2011 TM Burners but while I can hit a draw woods, it is a slice with the driver(9.5 deg) and I play my best just using the 3 wood instead. I have a tendency to get steep so have worked on a flatter swing which helped some. I really suffer off the tee when not using driver as I hit it about 40 yds longer than my 3 wood. I hit a friends Ping G25 driver last season and found myself a lot more accurate with it.  It was 10.5 deg S shaft.  I decided to go in and get fitted for a new driver. I tried Ping, Taylormade, Callaway, Cobra and Nike and according to the fitter and launch monitor/simulator the best for me was the G30 10.5 with S shaft. The surprise to me was that he said the loft was best set at 9.9 for me and he doesn't really see how my swing should have made me slice. Any thoughts on this. Hope I didn't just waste my money

First) Don't listen to a club fitter from a retail store on swing tips unless they are actually an instructor.

Second) The reason you play your best with a 3 wood is because you are too steep with your swing. Drivers are designed to hit up on the ball.

Thanks for the advice and links guys. I will have to spend more time on this site I see.  I am heading out west to play some wet weather golf next week so will get to try out some of the advice. I was out west a couple months ago and I notice I lose about 20-30 yds per club due to altitude and humidity so will have to consider that. I really liked the feel of the Ping driver that I ended up buying. Now I think back, I should have hit my old driver too, while I was there, that way I could have compared it. It had seen a lot of use so maybe it was time for a new one. I hit all the drivers I tried about the same distance (260-270) but the results on the launch monitor display were a lot more consistent with the Ping plus the placements showed up a little straighter.  I guess I'll have to keep my fingers crossed.  I traded the old driver in so no going back now.

Steve, you can't go wrong with a Ping Driver. I demoed the G30 also, it seemed like a really consistent club to me. If you feel like you selected the correct shaft for you, you should be good to go.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
