Sounds like a classic case of a prolapsed disc. It wasn't so much the back pain but the leg pain...It is almost undescribable. When the doc said before the operation that the worst case scenario was that I would lose feeling in my legs, I would have accepted that result! Incidentally, I would like to know where that 18% success rate figure comes from. My surgeon has a 9 out of 10 success rate for people regaining their normal life after surgery. I believe alot of the success (assuming of course that the surgeon does the surgery correctly) comes down to how you get through the rehab period. I had a strict month of nothing, then a month of walking and general house bound activities and finally a month of 4 days a week in the gym with progressive loading. This was all based on being able to play a physical sport again. This was all at the governments expense as well...gotta love the free health systems here in New Zealand.

I think you did.

For the past 6 months I've been struggling with back issues and seeing my chiro regularly, its gotten to the point where i dont even want to play a full round. My MD retired to make matters worse. And im the process of finding a new one so i can get some X-rays and possibly Physio and or surgery. (keep in mind im only 23)

Wow, that is depressing (as you say) to read. How old are you?

I'm 31, and thankfully I've been pretty safe so far. As a kid I never really banged balls or day, nor did I have a swing for the fences type swing. I think that helped my back stay "in shape". But, being 31, I can imagine things will start going sooner than later. I do go to the gym now to try and get some sort of personal health plan going. I feel better, stronger. I have had a few minor injuries this year. I played through them. At the gym I tweaked my shoulder doing some press on some machine. Needless to say I don't use that machine anymore. Thankfully my shoulder feels 100%. The other injury was just last week. My right wrist started bothering me. Today was the first day I haven't felt anything. I don't let these bother me.

Question for you c_mack9, I just posted in another thread ( http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showthr...326#post222326 ) about my lack of results with a chiropractor. Would getting massages help out more?

I prefer to fall asleep on my stomach and I believe I wake up on my stomach, and I do okay. I like to have one arm under my pillow and my head on top of that...

I do the same exact thing, and have a Memory Foam mattress, so there may be something to that! I just turned 35, and have had back problems since I was 22-23. I used to go to the chiropractor all the time, but the relief was always temporary, and personally I think the treatments were administered in a way designed to keep me coming back for more treatments. Finally, I purchased a TENS unit ( Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), and started a light workout program designed to stretch the lower back muscles and strengthen them. It has worked great for me. I still have the occasional bad day, but not nearly as often as I used to. The TENS unit works great, I get the same treatment as I used to get from the Chiro without the continuous cost for treatment. I think I payed $150 for the unit, it is handheld, about the size of a wallet, and you can take it anywhere. I would recommend anyone with back problems to purchase one, best thing I ever did. btw, I have seen them on eBay, used, for $50.

I suffer with intermittent back pain that I can normally associate with sleeping position or too much golf in a short period. I walk and carry, so my back takes a pretty good load. I hurt it 30 years ago on a trampoline but it was never a problem til I started playing a lot of golf. I also injured the connective tissue between my right ribcage and musculature. Not fun when that acts up unless you like hitting a 3 iron 150 while wincing in pain. I have to warm up extensively in cold weather or I am in for trouble.

My wife has degenerative back disease and it has progressed through 2 surgeries to a walker and costant pain. I feel lucky in comparison.
