Dear all,

My name is Onno Hennis and I am a 31-year old lawyer from Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

From 18 until 29 May 2015 my girlfriend and I will be making a trip through the Southern States starting in St. Louis and going to amongst others Nashville, Smokey Mountains and New Orleans. We have rented a SUV, so we will be crossing through Tennessee, Alabama, Missisippi, Louisiana and Arkansas.

I would love to play a nice round of golf on preferably on of the nicer courses located in one of these states. I am pretty flexible as to when and where, since to date we have not yet planned a definite line of travelling.

I was wondering whether people at this forum may have any recommendations for me. I will not bring my own clubs (due to bagage restrictions on the plane). In that sense, I need to rent a set of clubs at the golf course. I don't know whether that is possible at all. What I would absolutely love however, is if someone maybe could introduce me and hit the greens with me (my girlfriend does not play golf, so I don't have any companion). I don't know whether someone would be inclined to take a random stranger, but if this would sound like a funny and interesting idea to you, we could maybe get into contact and see whether this would fly (just like the golf ball). In return I would be obliged to offer you a round of golf on my home course in the Netherlands, De Noordwijkse Golf&Country; Club (http://www.noordwijksegolfclub.nl/index.php?mod=default&lan;=2). The course at my home club is a 18-hole links course and is considered one of the best mainland courses in Europe.

Some further information about me: I have handicap 15 (aiming to go below 10 this year). I used to play at De Houtrak in the Netherlands in the past and I have picked up golfing since last year again. I am very enthousiastic about golf, but I also like the social aspect of golfing (that means that I appreciate making jokes between the strokes). You can find more info about me on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/pub/onno-hennis/12/192/a75 or Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/onno.jolt

Of course, this all may sound a little bit peculier. Naturally, I would therefore be also very thankful if you could provide me with some recommendations on courses I may be able to play.

I am looking forward to receiving your reactions!

Warm regards from Amsterdam,

Onno Hennis

Alabama is on the way to New Orleans.  You may want to research the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama.  Course run north to south and throughout the entire length of the state. Most courses are 'upscale' enough that club rental is possible. Beautiful courses, scenery and the weather should be perfect in May.

Thank you for your great suggestion, Dave. The RTJ Golf Trail does indeed look like a wonderful set of golf courses spread around Alabama. What a great initiative to build and develop so many great looking courses. The information on the website of RTJ is very helpful and clear, so I will definitely consider playing there. RTJ offer the kind of courses I had in mind to play on whilst in the USA. So thank you very much indeed for the recommendation.

Would however somebody on the forum be inclined to team up with me for a round of golf, I shall be glad to hear of him/her.

@Lihu: thank you also for your a dvice. Unfortunately we will not be going to Florida. We have to little time to also visit these states. Next visit to USA I hope to see Florida as well.

Best,

Onno

    • I know you guys were discussing this like a year ago. But, ironically I just had this discussion with my brother-in-law. We literally just did one of these. I'd always used the "Slow-Cook, Rest, and Sear" Method. But my bother-in-law was convinced the "5-Min/lb, 500 degree" method was the way. So, we gave it a go. I have to say it came out great.  I have a 25 year old, electric oven, GE brand... Not sure if that matters, but it came out great. ... Of course we stressed that nobody was to open the oven.   I don't make these all that often so, I'm not sure if I can fully recommend one method or the other, because without doing a Pepsi Challenge, I'd say both ways come out great. 👍😁👍
