what happens with those new irons when the slots fill up with dirt? they slots on the front and the bottom. they need to slow down on pumping out new designs.

The slots are usually filled with some sort of transparent plastic compound. I would say something similar to polyurethane. This still allows for some flex and doesn't add any significant weight.

I played the SLDR irons for a bit and I had no issue with dirt being collected in the slot.

The Thru Slot (channel in bottom of sole) really helps with the launch of the ball on the longer irons (3i - 5i). And, the polymer fills the slot, keeping out dirt.

On YouTube , PGA pro Rick Shiels compares 7 irons for the RSi.2 (face slots, 31º loft) vs. the SLDR (no face slots, 32º loft).

On the video, the RSi 2 carries longer overall than the SLDR on toe hits, and on center hits too. So, I'm not sure how much the face slots contribute to the longer flight of the RSi 2.

And, the RSi.2 on video had similar flight patterns to the SLDRs, which I played last summer. ( @saevel25 and I did reviews on the SLDR irons for TST).

i play the RSI1 irons - they have the slots on the bottom and the face and dirt isn't an issue.  the slots are filled with a black rubbery substance.

clubs seem to be more forgiving on mishits.  check out reviews on youttube - the data supports it.
