Hi all, I dont know where to post this so sorry if its in the wrong spot.

I am new to golf.  By new I mean I am borrowing a set of irons to see if I even like golf on the range.  I have gone out once to hit golf balls and I really enjoyed it.  I played baseball for years and now am just burnt out on it, so to stay busy in the spring and summer and fall and winter I thought I would try golf.  Just some more background info on myself, I am a 16 year old becoming a junior in high school.  I am 6 foot 3 inches tall and weigh in right about 220.  I have played baseball since before I can remember.  Anyhow, this past Saturday I went out to the range to get some lessons from my pastor who has allowed me to borrow his clubs until I can get my own.  All we worked with was an 8 and a 9 iron.  With about a 10mph wind to our backs I was hitting between 130 to 160 yards with the 9 iron and about 170 with the 8.  To get to my point, What is the handicap index?  How is it calculated? How is it used?  Any help is appreciated as I am very new to this.  I have enjoyed myself so far. Thanks

Jason

A search on this site will show you dozens of threads about handicaps and how they're calculated, if you're interested in some light reading. But assuming you'd like something a little more user friendly, the best resource is probably here: http://www.usga.org/Handicapping.html At the USGA's own website. The videos explain the concept and process pretty clearly, and if you really want to dig into it, scroll down and open the handicap manual itself on the site. It's actually pretty easy to read and follow along. Welcome to the site, and to this silly, maddening game!

So how would I know the course rating on a course that isnt USGA affiliated?

You wouldn't, but it's very rare to find a regulation course in the U.S. that doesn't have a CR. I can only think of one. There are occasionally pitch and putt courses without CRs, but that's fine.

    • Could course committee have an MLR option to declare this bunker GUR?
    • Sorry, I will disagree. You got a penalty because you hit it somewhere and didn't want to play it from there. Bunkers are not the general area. If you had hit it into temporary water in the general area, you'd be entitled to relief. You hit it into a hazard, a bunker. Why should you get free relief when you hit it into a bunker? If someone else hit it into a different part of the bunker, without water, they'd not get a drop for free out of the bunker. Heck, it'd cost them two strokes if they didn't have an ACC and wanted to drop it out of the bunker.
    • I love golf, but we have some really dumb rules. Like this one, you get a penalty stroke because it rained.
    • No. If there was a place no closer to the hole that afforded some relief, you could have dropped there. If you were truly as far away from the hole as you could, in the "back" of the bunker, then… your options were basically to play it as it lies (lied? lay?) or take the penalty stroke and drop behind the bunker (keeping the point where the ball was between your drop and the hole).
    • Day 121 - Had a tournament today, not my best. I was hitting everything off the heel.
