Doug...BTW, That's my name as well..Eating and trying to keep up weight is very important...remember you are fighting a battle and the gladiator in the best shape usually wins. I did 39 radiations and 8 Chemos of Taxitere and Sisplatin.(Spelling is probably wrong) ..... But I had throat Cancer....and they fried me so bad I couldn't even drink water for a couple of days... They had mr on nearly 200 mg. of Oxycotton patches, IIRC,....1.5mg? of oral morphine or 15mg. of slow release....(anyway it was both, just unclear on the dosages, I was also taking Tylenol #4's with codeine every 4 hours ....and I needed them. During treatment, I not only lost my saliva, but taste buds too. It's a little hard for people to comprehend....but literally, it's like this: you know you need to eat....but....to put yourself in my shoes....you have a handful of sawdust...you must eat it without water..but it's good for you and will keep you alive....so I survived on Boost...and lost 40lbs. So force yourself to eat and get some boost....

Doug,  tks for the info.    I will be scheduled for radiation as soon as this series of chemo os over.     Then another cat scan to see if I am a candidate for surgery.     I am trying to stay active and at least several meals a day.  Even if they are not large in size.    I do take ensure with the 350 cal portion so that should help somewhat.

Doug

I got my Boost for free....start now with the 411 and find the services that will help you....unless you are very wealthy, you will appreciate the assistance...as Cancer is also an expensive disease.

Hey everyone,    finished my 7th round.   1 more to go than on to the radiation.    The Dr.'s are pretty optimistic so far.     They all believe the tumor is shrinking as a result of the chemo.     The next cat scan will show for sure.    Initially,  the tumor's size and location made it inoperable as it was too close to arteries and veins of the small intestine.  They were afraid that I could bleed out on the table if one was nicked.     But with substantial shrinkage there should be a significant margin to complete the surgery.     The surgery will include removal of 1/3 of my pancreas and 1/3 of my stomach.   So I will have a 2 mo recovery period.

Now for the good news  I am planning on playing 9 holes this pm.   9 holes tomorrow am.   18 hole Best ball tournament on  Fri.  Anyway guys enjoy your time on the links.    If you hit one in a sand trap dedicate it to me.   :-)    The last round I played I was in a total of 4 traps.    I thought I was in whistling straits.

Doug

Doug....eff....oh man, that is intense.... I always tried to remind myself that there were/are people worse off that I was. You certainly have fought and still have yet to fight. Keep it up man!!!! You effing rule.

Sorry for your loss. July 2013 I was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer that spread to my liver. I'm on the last chemo (stivarga) they have left to try before i'm headed to clinical trials. changed my diet completely recently and added juicing and supplements along with the chemo hoping it stops the "little bastard" inside. this is why i started golfing again this year to try and get more active. golf is a great motivator. before this chemo i had more energy and was doing yoga, exercising, and golf drills every other morning. not because of the cancer but because i wanted to improve my game. :)  i have been  playing 9 holes every other monday because the other mondays i was in the chemo lab. something to look forward to. i take my meds by mouth right now but i still play every other monday. last monday i was very weak and couldnt have played if i wanted to. (weakness is one of the side affects of stivarga. so is hand and foot syndrome.) so far the side affects have been minor but if my hands get crappy I got my gloves to get me through.  there be a method to my madness. :)

i am really looking forward to my big event oct 11th. friends from as far as Wisconsin are coming to play in the "First Annual Sante Two Gloves Memorial Golf Invitational."  For all the grammar police First annual is acceptable instead of inaugural because it is done tongue in cheek and you cant be more tongue in cheek then when a memorial event is hosted by the one it is honoring. haha according to the Chicago Manual of Style anyway. i still manage to get some range time but only about 20 balls at a time. full buckets knock me done for a few days now.  I actually think i am focusing better with only a half a bucket

Cancer blows but it can be reversed. I like this book "Never fear cancer again." lot of good stuff in it for those who want to change your diet also. The first chapter is a little unnerving. The author thinks chemo will only kill you. I disagree. my alternative medicine guy is a pharmacist who says do both. i'm going with that idea for now.

I have in my signature "Enjoy every sand wedge."  I found a clip on youtube when Warren Zevon (Werewolves of London, Excitable Boy,  lawyers, guns and money) dying of lung cancer made his last appearance on Dave Letterman. Dave asked him now that you have a terminal illness what do you know that we don't. Zevon replied, You have to remember to Enjoy every sandwich.   See what I did there. :)

Hey, @Sante TwoGloves , best wishes to your golf game, and battle with cancer.

My brother and I played golf until he eventually lost his battle to cancer.   He was given 2 - 3 years to live after being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer but he lived far longer than the initial prognosis.   I believe golf has something to do with outliving his doctors prediction. Golf kept his spirits up and I treasure the rounds I played with him.

And what's up with LH, RH stuff in your signature?   Are you playing golf with both hands?

thank you very much. the 5 year survival rate for what i have is only 8 % to 15 % so I definitely got an uphill battle but yes, golfing has been a blessing this year. i spend my free time now posting here, hunting for clubs,  playing with friends, at the range,  watching golf videos, etc.  I'm pretty much back to where i was 30 years ago, totally obsessed. lol  sure beats dwelling on the potential fatal side affects of the drugs im on, and how successful they are or aren't, and all that jazz.

when i started this year i was recovering from a left shoulder injury and was having trouble with my driver. pain and restriction in my range of motion. i have a history of hitting the ball fairly decent from both sides. when i was younger i had two bags.I would play one round left handed and the next right handed depending on how the course fit my game. and would score about the same, mid 40s. this year because of the shoulder i started playing my long clubs left handed.  so i ended up  with a mixed bag. woods left, irons right. my putting sucked so i tried putting left handed and it seemed more natural. Im right eye dominant and i read right eye dominant golfers may have an advantage putting left handed. not sure if that is true but i tried it and liked it. since the chipping stroke is  virtually the same as the putting stroke for most players i started carrying a left handed pitching wedge to be more consistent. i was playing all left handed for about a minute this year until i found a set of right handed irons that seem perfect for me. the difference is they are graphite shafts. my left handed irons are steel. so i am bouncing back and forth during a round and i wear two gloves just to made it easier. it is working out because some chemos have affected my hands and the gloves give me added protection and cushion plus with my red gloves i feel like spiderman when im playing. lol

That's what my brother did, too.

It's an incredibly hard journey to face.  I mean cancer, not golf.   Well, maybe both. :-) Take care, I will see you in this and other threads.

That's awesome!    This is worthy of opening a separate thread in a golf forum if you haven't opened one already. :-P Your HI should be divided into two for one thing - one for left and another for right hand play.   I also suspect it's not legal to carry two sets of clubs.   It gives you an unfair edge over others.   Then again, you have to buy two sets of everything which is a disadvantage. :-)

(Sorry, @iacas for posting in sequence.   Our responses crisscrossed.)

I enjoy playing that way now. I think it does give me some advantage coming off the tee and if I get a tough lie where hitting from one side of the ball is better than the other. I don't know if it's legal but I used to play one nine one way then switch bags at the turn. I did make a thread about it when I first joined.  I think the best response imo  then was from someone who said that most players could get by with 12 clubs and add two off handed clubs like a long iron and a wedge.

I had advanced stage colon cancer. They put a chemo pump on me with tubes into my neck, that gave me chemo 24 hours a day while I was on radiation before all the operations after I was on chemo for 6 months and luckly I don't have to have a bag. I generally don't tell people all this but, since you have this I thought it might help you to know it's been 11 years now and everything is alright. As you know it's tough but try to keep you spirits up. Don't listen to anything negative. Don't listen to the news haha. Anyway take care

That's wonderful to hear. My cousin also has stage 4 cancer but he had a liver resection early on that kept him cancer free for 4 years before it returned. He is starting his 11th year since diagnosed. I called him not too long ago and he was told recently the same thing as me, stivarga then clinical trials if that doesn't work. I sure caught up with him fast. I was wondering where you were treated? Maybe our doctors missed a class. :-)

    • No rain while I was out (9am to 11:30am). Fairly pleasant for a late November day in the Mitten.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-25 Did the BAD Challenge and hit a bunch more other little shots. This was one of the closer shots.
    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲
