Hey guys im new to the game. I have been playing for just over a month, but i practice everyday and seem to have a natural talent. Im looking to replace my northwestern and bob murphy iron blades with something i can get some distance out of without compromising the control of my shots. Also looking to spend around 200-250 on new or used. Ive been researching and what i come up with is this. I could get Used Adams Super S-$187- or any suggestions .New Rocketbladez $264 or Nike Covert 2.0 $224 or i can get Wilson Staff Di11 for $299 or C100 $239. So my problem is choosing. Kind of want used and better but worried about overall feel of thinner clubs(though mine are thin now) also looking for a fairway and ill be set! Any thoughts. Help please

Years ago I knew a guy who had the same question. Problem was he did not want to buy a set clubs, and then find they were not what he was looking for. He had narrowed his choices down to three different brands. So, he bought a 5i of each brand, with his specs and gave each a try. After giving each of these 5is a thorough work out, he decided which brand he thought would do him the most good, bought the rest of the set, and never looked back.

IMHO, with the budget you posted, I would give the Tour Edge brand a serious look in your own swing specs. I won't tell you they are the best brand available, but I can tell you their service after the sale is as good, or even better than any other brand  available. So is the quality of their clubs. I have been playing (G2s) their brand for years, and I can tell you their service dept has been 5 star every time I needed something.

On another note if you have decent club fitter/builder in your area, you might want to look at a set of component clubs. Again, built to your own swing specs.

BTW, I am no expert, but I do understand what it take in my own game to play well.

All the clubs you mentioned are decent, and honestly at this stage of the game, it doesn't matter, as long as they fit you reasonably. Any of those will be a boost in confidence over the ones you are using. If you buy used, check the condition of the grips, and if they are worn, replace them. Replacing a set of grips on a used set will cost a fair % of what you paid for the clubs, but don't consider it an investment. It is just maintenance like replacing tires and changing oil on a vehicle.

The budget you have for purchase price of clubs is reasonable, and you should budget an equal amount for lessons from a qualified instructor. That you have natural ability is great, but getting on the right track from the get go will help make the best use of those natural gifts.

Back to clubs, another economical suggestion is to study the PING fitting guide on their website, and pick up a set of Eye 2's or ZINGs in the appropriate length and dot color. With a little looking, these can be had for $200 or less, not counting the aforementioned grips. They will be sufficient for a long time.

As to distance, it is all relative. What is important is to know how far you can fly each club. It is true that a new set's 6 iron will hit as far as a 4 iron of 20 years ago, but that is because the new set's 6 iron IS the 4 iron from 20 years ago with a 6 stamped on it instead of a 4. There is new technology, sure, but the main reason they go farther is that the loft and length specs are 2 clubs hotter.

Don't know where you live, but some golf shops both carry used iron sets and have stalls with trackman or similar (Roger Dunn in my old neighborhood had both).  If you can find such a shop, my advice would simply be to go and hit a couple clubs from each set they have in your price range and choose the one that feels best and gives the best results.

Ive decided that im gonna buy individual irons. A 4, a 6, and either a 9 or PW. doesnt even matter what brand, that way i get to try different ones then next year I can decided on a brand that I like when I have more money to spend. What do you golfers think of that idea....

I think it's a tad extreme. I would just go get fitted. You can easily find out which irons you like in an afternoon hitting different clubs. No need to really buy individual irons and test them throughout the year. Heck, that is like buying half a set just to find one club you like so you can buy a full set. Just a tad too much, at least I wouldn't do it. .

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
