Play Titleist AP2 irons with Project X 6.0. Looking to get a flatter trajectory and more carry.

Trackman says I carry the 7 iron around 152 yards, launch angle showed a little too high according to guy at the store.

Driver specs:
Callaway X-Hot Pro 9.5 deg w/ project x 6.0
Swing speed: 100 mph
Carry: 239 yards 258 roll
Spin: 2850

For irons the Mizuno shaft optimizer gave me these results:

Head speed: 83
Tempo: 6
Toe Down: 3
Kick Angle: 6
Release Factor: 7

Recommended:

XP 115 S300
NS Pro 1150 S
KBS Stiff 120g

Currently playing Project X 6.0, ball flight seems too high to me, 7 iron carry 152 yards.

Guy recommended KBS V Stiff 110g (said they were not listed but he thought it would bring my launch down)

Looking for a little flatter trajectory and more carry.

What would you guys recommend? Just go with XP 115 s300?

Thank you,

Marc

Well, the KBS tour shafts tend to have a higher ball flight, which is not what you wanted. If you were to get a KBS shaft you'd want to look more at the C-Taper since that is the lower ballflight option offered by that company. Have you tried any of these shafts? Why not go to the golf store where you intend to buy the shafts and demo them all in an AP2 head, then pick the one that works best for you? Always try before you buy if possible, and it's entirely possible in this case.

Not sure why you would want a 7i with a low flight?

PX6.0 sounds a little heavy for 7i carry of 152 yards and 83mph SS? I would go with the XP 115 S300. S300 might be too heavy for the longer carry you desire.

For what it's worth, I absolutely agree with the Mizuno optimizer and will use it again. Three years ago, the optimizer suggested the same shaft - DG S300 XP, for my MP-63's. I couldn't be happier with the flight and feel of the shafts. By the way, I carry my 7-iron about 155-160 yards.

You have short distance for a PX 6.0 7i, but the ball flight is too high?

A couple of things to consider:

  • Have iron checked for loft and lie; make sure you didn't bang it somewhere and end up with basically two 8 irons in your bag.
  • Have someone check your swing - if you're fighting weight and extra firm tip, you might be scooping the ball.

The current PX shaft is the Rifle shaft; PW no longer offers the Rifle Flighted shafts. The flighted shafts gave a little extra launch in the long irons, and kept the ball from ballooning on the short irons.

Here's the current Project X self-description:

Quote:
A proven winner on the PGA Tour, the patented RIFLE design
features a discrete constant taper for each shaft in the set. Longer
taper rates result in more energy transfer to the ball, getting the
ball up faster and flattening out quicker for a penetrating trajectory
and ball flight.

Basically, PX launches higher but has flatter trajectory in flight.

WUTiger...Thank you! I spent some more time on monitor and belive I have issue fixed! I was having trouble with my release, my hands were not turning over. Left wrist up at finish. So...made a grip change, rotating my right hand so V points at my chin and not at my right shoulder. This is now allowing my wrists to turn over and I am no longer adding loft at impact. Interestingly...your comment on shaft weight might be correct! I figured this out while hitting a nike covert with dynalite 90 stiff shafts. Not what mizuno shaft optimizer recommended. But they felt great and my release is way better. I was crushing 4 iron through AW. I left the store with them. Looking forward to hitting them more.

Nice, but I feel that you should have left the store with a JPX-850 forged instead. . . ;-)

LOL, I feel I should have left the store with about 10 more sets of various irons lol.  Yes, I am an Iron whoXe.  :)

I am going to hit them later today at the range if the rain holds off (not looking promising!).  Excited to work on grip change and see what these babies can do!  I'm thinking they are a club and half longer than the AP2, Atleast the way I am hitting them.  I haven't hit them on but almost all 7 irons regardless of lot I was carrying 150-152 with too high launch.  Started hitting these with grip change and was seeing 165-168 carry in simulator.  I'm expecting to hit them 160-165 on trackman, but we shall see!

Well saga may continue...hit range with coverts and did not hit them well. Interestingly, I bought a used ping eye 2 black dot 8 iron, that I hit extremely well!

So, you're saying. . . Mizuno might be in your future? :-)

Man...so been thinking a lot about set up for irons. Leaning towards three options. 1. Keeping Nike Coverts 2. Buying set of Ben Hogan Apex Plus irons with Apex 4 and having them reshafted with dg xp 115 s300. 3. Buying Ping Eye 2 w/ zz lites

Used the Optimizer (was an easy yet very informative process) and bought a sweet set of MP54's.  Love these clubs.  Not as forgiving on the days my swing is not all there, but when I am hitting well these clubs are like knife going through butter.  Will say I did like the Callaway Apex's.  Came very close to buying them, but have never been much of a Callaway fan so my brand preference came into play.

Well, bought a set of Ping Eye 2 plus no plus 3-SW.  I am refinishing them, new custom color paint fill, sanded and polish heads and new grips.  I just had the loft and lies adjusted and will install grips tonight.  Can't wait to put these into play.  VERY excited to hit them again after loft/lie adjustment as they were off a good bit throughout the set and had the lie adjusted to my blue dot spec from black.

    • Played Musgrove Mill today. 72.3/155. +9 for 15 official holes as 2 holes are closed, and the par 5 16th plays as a converted par 3. We played the first three holes over to finish 18, and parred 1 and2 amped bogeyed 3. The good: hit every fairway. 1 less than normal for the converted par 3, but the second time I have done that this year. My sand wedge approach on 10 after a monster drive hit the pin in the back left corner hit he pin and spun away to 9’, and I missed the putt.   The great: hit 8 GIR and 7 were inside 10’. Needs work: Missed every birdie putt. No lip-outs. Just struggled on fast greens. Three-putted the par-5 9th with the pin on the back tier and jut missed hitting my approach to the proper level and it spun all the way to the front of the green.
