Hi all,

I started playing golf this summer and from the start I have noticed a problem with slicing the ball. For a couple of months I was using a flexible driver and once I used a stiff I realized my swing may be too fast for the club. I have a club speed of 98. I bought a new driver with a stiff shaft and at a simulator and stopped slicing completely, but once i used it at the driving range today I immediately began to slice again and the ball went way up into the sky. Any thought?  Also, what should the length of my tee be above the ground?

Thanks,

Sean

Because your path is well left (assuming you're a righty) of your clubface.
Because your path is well left (assuming you're a righty) of your clubface.
@iacas is 100% correct obviously, as usual, but I'll try to add some info hoping it may help. First, driver tee height. I think the easiest thing to do is place your driver club head on the ground and putt a ball on a tee in front of it. Now raise the tee up so the top of the ball is even with the top of the club face. This is a good starting point as far as tee height. Some people tee their ball up very high, some not so much. Ideally you would like to be swinging up slightly with your driver at contact, and have the ball hit the center of the club face. Trial and error at the driving range should give you a good idea of how high to tee up. As far as the slice goes. The easy answer is that you are swinging across your body, outside to inside as you make your downswing. If your club face is pointed in the direction of that swing path, you will hit a straight pull to the left in the direction of that out to in swing path. However, if your club face is open (pointing to the right) of that swing path, you will slice the ball to the right. You need to change the swing path or the club face angle. Or more likely, a little of both.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
