Leaning on Club - Can Break Shaft?

Today I heard 2 guys arguing about shafts. One was leaning on his club waiting to take a shot and another was saying that leaning on the club will break it. Any thoughts on this?

Today I heard 2 guys arguing about shafts. One was leaning on his club waiting to take a shot and another was saying that leaning on the club will break it. Any thoughts on this?


Leaning on a club could break the shaft, which could could cause the remainder of the club to pierce the player's ribs and through he heart as he fell onto the club resulting in his instantaneous death ... death by broken heart.

Freakish incidents do occur...

Brilliant! Would it weaken the shaft at the head point etc? Found both views interesting but didn't know who was correct.

Depending on the shaft, but eventually too much weight against the shaft could result in shaft fatigue, micro strands splitting, which eventually leading to breakage.

No idea what shaft they were but heard them say they were new. He wasn't putting his whole body weight or anything onto it. Think it was just a light press if anything.

Over here, I just do not see guys leaning on their clubs.

I don't think I have every seen anyone leaning on a club, and I don't think I ever considered it..

It was a couple of old guys so I'm not sure to be honest. Just got me wondering if that would damage it.

Well put it this way, if you were to put your palm on the butt of the club and apply a small bit of pressure would this cause damage as it would be getting pressed into the ground?

Doubt it. Typically a golfer would only place that type of pressure on a club for a few seconds. At the same time, I've had a shaft snap when I casually tossed it at my bag. A PGA Touring Pro recently tossed his putter at his bag and damaged it.  One just never knows ... so it's best not to place that type of pressure on a club.

We're currently in the pub and my friend who has played with one of the guys mentioned he's seen the shaft bend ever so slightly as hes had the same chat about it but then it never seems to cause a problem. Guessing shafts are meant to bend slightly.

Well, yes, they impart an energy transfer to the ball when they bend in the right places depending on the skill of the golfer.

If a shaft was rebar, ball would not travel far.

      Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.

      As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
