I know this has been brought up before, kinda. What I really need is some advice. I haven't played in 8yrs due to a severely injured back and nerve damage to my left leg. I had surgery and was told to quit playing but here is my problem. My son is 7 years old and he wants to play golf so we hired an instructor here locally for him. I had a really tough time giving up the game when I did and I sold everything. Now that I'm watching him play and trying to keep him active in it I am finding myself having some real trouble not trying to play again. So, I've decided to heck with it I'm going to play and ask later. I went through some motions and even swung a couple clubs and it felt good just thought I might fall on my face. What I really noticed is that my swing will be much slower but much more controlled so I'm thinking something with a flex that a senior would use even though I'm only 36. Any suggestions on a setup for a really really slow but controlled swing would be helpful. I was never a really good golfer but loved to play and am looking at a really forgiving set of irons due to the fact that I might have issues addressing the ball the same with every swing until I can learn to play with this. Thanks again

Get a second opinion before you start playing.

I wouldnt plunk down a lot of money for any set of clubs right now. Your swing could get faster as you progress or you could lost interest or have issues again and want or need to quit. Look for used clubs and experiment. I did the same because of my own health issue and finally found the perfect set of irons for me...at a goodwill a dollar an iron. Lol my whole bag cost me less than most players pay for shoes. Some yoga poses every morning helped me swing better. Definitely need to work on your flexibility.

The second opinion is in the works and I am seeing my specialist in two weeks so I'm pretty stoked. I believe warming up by stretching and possibly yoga is a great idea as that should help a ton. My plan is to get setup on a set of clubs that are about two to three years old. I'm really interested to hear if the flex of the shaft can make a big difference for someone in my situation as far as helping / hurting my ability to hit the ball consistent. Thanks for the ideas guys.

Flex can make a huge difference good or bad but it is not standardized from company to company so you need to test them. maybe go to a golf galaxy and compare shafts with their simulator. they have used clubs you can try out.  speaking of goodwill,  I picked up a driver the other day and the flex on the shaft said Tour. It was very whippy and i couldnt hit a good ball to save my life even with a very slow swing. it kept hooking on every shot. apparently my swing speed was too much for that particular shaft and I am not that fast of a swinger. $1.60 with my senior citizen discount. lol. i donated it to one of the ranges i go to.  search around for  irons with different flexes and take them to the range. i think there is where you will discover if you are  r , a, or ladies flex currently. i believe i read somewhere that ben hogan once said its 90% shaft. worry about the heads later in my opinion.

You know just recently I've been seeing Uniflex shafts, never tried them and wondered if they would actually work as promised, but supposedly they increase stiffness with increased swing speed might be good for you if your swinging slow now but work up your swing speed as you get used to playing with your injury.

    • Typically less than 50. I find this can be affected by the "CART" signs on a given course. I don't like taking my rangefinder out of the cart and carrying it around to the green. I am very fearful I will leave it somewhere.
    • First ever holed out greenside bunker shot! It's crazy it took this long to finally get one during a round, but the cold streak is officially over. Hole 6 on the Palmer Course at PGAN. I hit my driver like 225 into a really stiff wind, then worm burned a hybrid into the bunker. I was about I dunno, 40-45 feet away. Birdie! Let's go! The red Xs the approximate location of each shot.  Really fun!!
    • Day 23: Rained all day, so no ball hitting. Worked indoors on top of the backswing feel, and also putted around the living room working on bead.
    • Played Four Oaks in Dracut today going back to the 2 man scramble match play format. My brother and I shot a team 81 winning 3 and 2. Had so many good shots today using a more centered turn. Seems to have really iginited my golf game. We'll see if I can keep it going.
    • I read about him.  Hopefully we have a good “Next Generation” in PGAT future
