Before the new groove rules you could totally rip apart the side a prov1 or V1x. I'd often see strips of the cover material embedded in the grooves of fresh wedges. It would leave a smooth spot the size of a nickel on the side of the ball.

Aren't amateurs still allowed to use the clubs with the old grooves? Maybe his wedges are a little old.

They're still allowed. I'm just not really of fan of bifurcated rules so I play the new wedges.
