I'm looking for a hybrid 3 for my wife. She currently hits a men's driver with regular flex. She hits a men's driver because of her height. She also plays men's irons. She does have trouble hitting her 3 wood, and I'm looking for a hybrid for her to have something between her 3 wood and 4 iron. Any thoughts on whether a men's or women's hybrid would be better for her or easier to hit? I'm afraid that if she goes with a women's hybrid then it would go the same distance as her 4 iron. Any thoughts would help.

Look up the specifications of her clubs. Find the loft of the 4 iron and the 3 wood. Get a loft in between, preferably with the same flex and etc. Men vs women do not really matter if the physical aspects of the club are what you want. Just do not ignore shaft length, as I assume female clubs are a bit shorter on average, but not sure.

Ignoring all that, pretty much any 3 hybrid (19*) will go further than any 4i (25*) as long as it is hit well.

You didn't say how young/old or athletic your wife is, so I'll just share what my wife and another pretty good woman golfer has in their bag on the long end of things.

Wife:  Driver, 7-wood, #5 and 6 hybrid, 7i and down; all Ping clubs

Friend's wife:  Driver, 5-wood, #5 hybrid, 6i and down - note:  this girl RARELY hits the 6-iron.  All TaylorMade clubs

The reason they don't carry 3-woods and 3 and 4 hybrids is due to slower swing speeds and their inability to get the longer, less-lofted clubs up and flying.  They would get ZERO benefit from a 3-wood or 3 and 4 hybrid off the deck.  Both girls went to professional club-fitters.

Unless your wife is really serious about golf and seriously good, 'easy-to-hit' (see above) should drive the club selection.

Just a couple of examples to noodle over.

How far does she hit her driver?

To be honest I wouldn't get less than a 4-5 adjustable hybrid. Seriously. I hit a driver 230 yds average and I don't use a 3 wood off the deck. I rarely, if ever, hit my 5 wood. I hit my 4 hybrid maybe once or twice a round. Usually the longest iron I hit off the deck is my 6 iron, although I can hit a 5 iron pretty well, I'm more confident with a 6 iron.

The best way to figure it out is to have her try. You might want to try a mens hybrid, but with a senior flex shaft. My wife's swing speed is at the point where she could use either women's flex or senior flex. So your wife might be in that range too.

Definitely get her a hybrid or two. BUT, have her try out a 4W or a 5W. Golf Digest covered studies a couple years back on fairway woods and the average golfer. Studies found the average golfer could hit a 4W more reliably - and sometimes farther - than a 3W.

One FW could give her extra distance from good lies. Also note: low-profile FWs will give higher launch than FWs with deeper faces.

    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip.
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
    • Caution for the seniors on weight training: Listen to your body. (I'm 75) I got a recent session with an orthopedist after a training-related injury. I put too much weight on a new resistance machine at the gym and ended up with bursitis in my left hip. Of course, it's the hip I dislocated back in 2023. I have my first physical therapy session tomorrow. I remarked that some days I can do 45 lbs. chest press - two sets - without much effort. But other days it drops down to 30 (😩) with just one set. (Complicating factor: I had digestive problems in this fall and lost about 20 lbs., with slip in muscle tone.) Orthopedist said that I want to feel some resistence, but that I should go with lots of reps with manageable weights rather than trying to set some sort of lift-pound record. I'm sure I'll get some refinements on lifting during tomorrow's PT.
