I just hope the other guy shows up regardless of how well/poor they play. In a league and/or competitive playing situation, it's hard for me to focus as much as I should if I am playing alone. However in the spirit of the original question, I would always prefer to play against a lower handicap player. I always figured that if I did not play against better players, I was missing out  on something.
