i am looking to get a custom made 3 iron and was wondering how much it would cost (not looking to get the most expensive shaft/head/grip)

Let's take a look at at couple of options.

Model

Loft

Shaft

BasePr

Callaway

XR

18°

39.5”

$100

TaylorMade

RSi1

17°

39.5”

$100

Stock shafts:

  • XR:  TT Speed Step 80 (88-89 grams | Project X SD graphite (55-58 grams)
  • RSi1: Reax Steel (09-95 grams) | Reax Graphite (45-75 grams)

If you get a custom fitting, and don't select an upcharge shaft and $20 each grips, your cost for either club should be $100 . For the major OEMs, custom fitted clubs cost no more than off-the-rack clubs unless you upgrade shafts and grips beyond stock. (This is general policy if you buy a new set of irons; I don't know if there's a surcharge for fitting only one club).

You said you're not looking for the "most expensive shaft/head/grip..."  But, if you're going to bother with getting fitted, you may need to upgrade the components to make the custom fit worthwhile.

As @SavvySwede cs are you trying to achieve?

And, a caution from club designer Tom Wishon: the 24/38 rule > TW suggests the average golfer has trouble hitting a numbered iron that is less than 24º loft and has shaft longer than 38".

If you must get a 3i, consider getting the shaft softstepped.  To softstep a shaft, the clubsmith would put a shaft tip-trimmed for a 2i into your 3i. This would increase the flexibility of the tip half of the club, and increase your chances of getting a good launch with a low-lofted clubhead.

I'm not the best golfer, as my HDCP indicates, but until a couple of years ago I carried a 3i (21º)  strictly as a driving iron. But, I quickly found that a 4H goes a bit longer, and is much more reliable.

Before you buy the 3i, at least glance at the following:
