Depends on how much you've got to spend, and what your goals are. Spend too little and you may be dissatisfied with the game because the equipment doesn't add any enjoyment (or rather, it subtracts some). Spend too much and you'll feel burned. Spend the right amount on the wrong things and you'll feel burned too.

Where do you play, what's your budget, and what do you hope to get out of your first set of clubs? Are other accessories (like a bag) to be included in the figure?

Erik is right - start with a budget. I'd go even further - regardless how you play, where you play, how often and how serious you play - budget comes first.
After that - go to a well equipped pro shop, pick 3 or 4 demo clubs and swing away. Whatever you like - take it. I bought my first 3 sets like that, before I become a snob and Taylor-Made Cool-Aid drinker

...$300.00 ...should i get custom length...

tough combination. w/o the customization I'd advise to reverse the process - first go to the golf store, try all kind of sticks and go to eBay to get it half price

but once you say "customize" - eBay is out and so are good deals. Tough.. hope you'll find someone who has experience with the "not-so-big-name-in-business" companies - there are plenty out there. I only know dynacraft a bit - had two sets built from their parts - but there is the hook - you have to do it yourself or know somebody who can do it - you'd be able to customize and save tons of bucks. Good luck.

    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
    • Exactly correct.   I was absolutely certain about the penalty (none here), but the bit about where they play from can be really confusing the first time you read it.  In my big paper rule book, i used colored highlighters to make it clear.  Good thing I did, at the Cascades there's little to no cell service, so using the rules app on the phone wasnn't possible.
    • Taking a crack it, but looks pretty clear. 11.1  Ball in Motion Accidentally Hits Person or Outside Influence. a. No Penalty to Any Player If a player’s ball in motion accidentally hits any person (including the player) or outside influence: There is no penalty to any player. This is true even if the ball hits the player, the opponent or any other player or any of their caddies or equipment. Reading further down it looks like they have to play the ball as it lies. No replay from the previous spot.
    • I had an interesting one yesterday, a local qualifier for the US Senior Open, at the Cascades Course at the Homestead.  Well, first things first, the VSGA arrnged for the officials to play the Cascades on Monday at the players' practice round rate.  Its lots of fun, rather old-style (built in the 1920s).  anyway, a player missed a short putt, and (apparently embarrassed) took a step to be ready to tap the ball back in.  The ball lipped out, and hit the player's foot.  I was nearby, and they waved me over, and asked "What do we do now?"  I was pretty sure of the ruling, but asked them to wait for a few seconds while i double-checked.  I did have it correct, even though its one of the more confusing rules in the book right now.  I'll leave the correct answer out for now, in case anyone wants to guess, or research it, and post their ruling.
