This is something I can say that is critical in my swing. The backswing just sets you up for a great downswing. I have the tendency to try to stay too centralised and it wasn't until I saw a video of my backswing that I noticed a slight reverse pivot at the top. So what I thought was a full turn was actually bad positioning. When it's right it feels shorter less effort and the divots are shallow and it feels like I have time because my left side hasn't collapsed. That means your left side drops and then compensations have to be made on the way down to get your secondary spine angle back. Anyone else struggled with this and how much difference did it make when you truly stayed behind the ball by not losing your angles?

Would help to post a video of your swing, but I think I have a similar issue.

In the couple short lessons I had, one of the biggest criticisms I got was that I was going way too far in my back swing. He told me to take "half a back swing", and showed me the video... I was like 90% of my normal swing; but didn't throw off other things.

Have you tried recording your 'shorter' backswings?

I have a record function on my tablet just waiting for a nice day to go outside and film it. I've done some mirror work and got the feel of it. Wanted to bed it in for a couple of weeks before filming the results. I also have had a few sessions in my net to ingrain it. Definitely feels different so I'm hopeful that I'm on the right track. Never uploaded a video here so will have to do it.

    • I really do find the masters stuffed shirts to be insufferable. Or is it instufferable?
    • I'm hearing this morning that Robert MacIntyre may be facing some sort of discipline (probably a stern warning) for the finger incident on 15 yesterday.  It dawns on me his upbringing would have been during Tiger's prime years -- he's 29 now, and would have been in elementary school in the early 21st century.  Someone should tell him that the swearing wasn't what made Tiger great at golf.   Or John Daly (or Don January?) or whoever else we associate with both being good at golf and producing choice words on television.
