Started golf over the past Summer, and started with a very old Lynx Black Cat driver. People suggested buying something newer, and I found an R7 which I bought off kijiji for about $25. I like the shots I hit with it (230-240 average guessing, based on some short 250/270 par4s on my course), but have been wondering if this club itself is even a little of a handicap compared to something newer? Since golf season is over in a few weeks, I was thinking moreso for next summer.

Thanks!

Yeah, I'd get a new one. All I know is that I can't hit the older drivers my dad had kept as far, or as well as new ones I have tried.

If you like Taylormade, the SLDR 430 is pretty cheap and would be a nice transition for you going from 425-430cc. Really great club. The fact that you can adjust it is a plus, especially if you don't think you will get fitted (which you probably should btw).

The age of the club isn't going to be a hindrance to you. It's new enough that it's got a lot of technology in it, it's got the big 460 cc or whatever head, etc, so it's not hurting you in that regard.

It is possible, however, that there is one out there that would fit you better if you went and got custom fit.  Ideally, you could find a place that will fit you for a driver for free or cheap and just get the shaft and specs put into the r7 or something else that isn't brand new and $400.

That's the key, really. The R7 isn't ancient by anything but marketing standards. The benefit of switching to a new driver would derive marginally from technical improvements and primarily, potentially but not necessarily, from a better fit. One switches equipment because it's a better fit, not for the sake of getting newer clubs. Assuming the financial cost isn't negligible; if you don't bother to stop to pick up bills smaller than a $100 on the street, then go for it! Haha.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
