I tend to work on swing changes over the winter using my simulator since our season is so short. My biggest issue in my swing is I overswing really, really bad. After doing some analyzing I have figured out it is due to my hip rotation, my belt buckle pretty much moves 90 degrees to the right in the backswing which causes my club to go WAY past parallel. It is a move so ingrained I am having a lot of trouble trying to stop it and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on drills or even any devices I could make or use to help break it? I have tried the feeling of a smaller backswing and spent a lot of time on it and when I think I had it under control, I recorded myself and found out I wasn't even close..lol. Thanks!

Im with ya on shortening the swing. Its hard to do nd progress is slow. It will get shorter but you have to be diligent in working on it. I was watching youtube videos on this subject and one instructor mentioned it could take months to get it where it needs to be. It took me quite a while to notice any change and Im still a ways away.

With all that being said a good feel for me is to keep the right arm straight throughout the backswing. As to the hips Im sure someone else here can help you with that.

are you sure you are overseinging because of your hip rotation?  If you post a video of your swing maybe you can get a second opinion on the cause.

I know for certain that is the cause, I have very little bend with my left arm and I'm just not that flexible..lol. When I do slow swings and keep my hips to a more appropriate rotation my arms can just reach parallel with the club.

Usually what appears as too much hip rotation is typically the hips not rotating on a steep enough pitch. Hips are turning too level to the ground. Want it to look something like this.

I know this topic is pretty old, but I recently discovered that I have the same exact same problem as the OP. My hips rotate too excessively, which lets my shoulders rotate way past 90 degrees. This causes me to have a really looong backswing, resulting in an overswing. One thing that I am trying now is to just focus on the shoulder turn. I initiate the backswing with a shoulder turn only first. Keep the hips still for the moment. Then try to rotate your left shoulder to 90 degrees. Now, if you don't cheat by just moving the arms, you'll find that it is quite impossible to turn your left shoulder to 90 degrees without moving your hips (unless you are Plastic Man or Mr. Fantastic!). So, try to get to 90 degrees with your shoulders only at first - you'll find that you can't actually get to 90, only THEN allow your hips to rotate only as much as needed for your shoulders to get to 90. Once your shoulders get to 90 this way, that's it. You're done. You should be starting the downswing at that point. Another way of looking at this is that your shoulders are moving/turning your hips, not your hips moving/turning by themselves or independently. I find that I get a lot more coil this way too, and aches in places that I've never experienced before, which should be a good thing, I suppose... Hahaha.

    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
    • Day 12 - 2025-12-31 Limited time today, and heavy rains here. 5-10 minutes of mirror work for full swing, working on trail side.
    • Day 2, 12/31/25.  Similar to yesterday (rainy, no surprise), I hit primarily 6-iron full swings with the same focus;  I also hit some chips (about 1/8 swing) with the 54.  About two dozen full swings and an equal number of short shots.  All of this was indoors, off a mat, into a net, real balls.
