I wanted to share my experience with a G30 LS driver.  I was coming from a G25 driver.  I hit the G25 well but thought I might get a little more.  I had the club shortened to 44.5 by Pete's golf in NY.

I loved the shorter driver.  It made the stock driver length (45.5 I think) feel like a telephone pole.  I played the driver and had success with it.  BUT  I hit some drives that were not great drives but not that bad and when they left the head I knew they were not that good but when they landed it did not add up.  They were 20-30 yards short of where I expected them.  I have a GC2 launch monitor.  When I get on the monitor if I am hitting it well there is no problem, spin is 2,000 to 2,400.  The ball flies the distance I expect.  BUT when I am not hitting it well some miss hits will have spin numbers of on the 1200 range!  This is not good.  The ball drops from the air.  With my swing speed I need more spin.

So the moral of the story for me is that the juice is not worth the squeeze.  I am too inconsistent with the driver to use a low spin club.  I switched back to my G25 and when the season ends I will send it out to be shortened and have the swing weight corrected because it was shortened.

Yeah, this is sort of the danger of the low spin drivers. They sell themselves really well on a launch monitor at a pro shop or golf store because they're going to give the biggest number for most people. But the drop off is massive on mishits and the ball will just fall out of the sky on the worst hits. I was getting some huge carry numbers with the Callaway BBA 815 DBD versus the regular BBA 815, but there were 50 yard differences between my best and worst shots with the 815 DBD. I'd prefer to eliminate the 200 yard drives in exchange for losing that 280 carry once every 3 rounds. The LS Tec is in the same boat with the 815 DBD in that regard as it's #1A to the #1 815 DBD being my longest drives when I tested drivers over the past two years, so I get why you were drawn to it. These low-spin drivers ain't for us, I guess.

This is the reason I got rid of my Bio Cell + this year. While it did give me the longest drives I've ever had in my life, it also gave me some of the worst drives I've ever had. When I went to the G25 I lost some of the top end distance by my typical/average drive actually increased in length because the non-perfect strikes went longer and were much more manageable. The problem is now that driver is gone and I'll be looking for a replacement for next season. Though, worst case scenario is I just buy a used one on Ebay or something if I can't find anything that I hit as well. I just would prefer something new enough that it'll have a warranty on it.

The standard G 30 is an awesome club.

I know it's a hike but come down here to Golfsmith near Dayton. They have a huge selection of used drivers. You can test them out as well.

I tried the G30, and I did get good numbers with it. It's definitely on the list of possibilities.

That's definitely a good idea, I tend to not think about heading down that way to do that. That may be a something for me to do this weekend. Thanks for the suggestion.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
