Which members are HS coaches and do you coach boy's or girl's golf?

Coach (me) to player, "Hey, what percentage of putts left short never go in?"  Player, "Coach, 100% of putts left short never go in."  Coach (me), "Exactly."  Player, "Coach what percentage of putts that go long never go in."  LOL!

iacas, if it is so much more rewarding then you are a very fortunate person.  This is my 29th year of coaching at the high school level in four different sports.  I've been so blessed to have been given this life.  I got a girl to state this year who has only golfed for 2 1/2 years.  While she didn't do well, She represented one of the smallest school in our class and will only get better.  Only 110 players made it to state in our class (Only two classes in ours state - A and AA.)  We are AA.  As she was standing there crying her eyes out yesterday, I reminded her that there were only 2 girls from Southern Illinois that made it state this year and she is one of them.

Do you coach some individual players?  Or a complete team?

If you were asking me, I coach the Penn-State Behrend men's and women's golf "teams." The women's "team" is just two players, currently. The men, I kept 13.

Cool.  That's the first I heard.

I imagine you probably have some interesting coaching stories.

This isn't my thread, but I imagine @CoachB25 could be convinced to share some of his.

iacas, I don't mind anyone sharing coaching stories.  I have many and from the 4 sports I've been blessed to coach.  I have them as well from coaching baseball in the former Soviet Union in 1988 before the wall fell and the Soviet Union ceased to be.  I have stories of great success and incredible loss.  I have stories of tremendous loyalty and betrayal.  I get up every morning and realize that I am the most Blessed person on the face of the earth.  I'm a Coach!

BTW, the Avatar is my favorite player of any sport at the age of 16.  That's my kid!

I have coached our high school golf team for the past 8 years. I did step down after this season which just ended for a few reasons but hope to come back to coaching them down the road.

Welcome to this forum, Coach! We hope you share some of your wisdom over time. Your life sounds fascinating, and it's great to have another new and interesting voice added to the mix. Great thread- I'll be following here, but unfortunately I'm not a coach to anyone but my kids in academic endeavors, for whom I was not able to activate any their athletic genetic material. Oh well, they're a joy nonetheless- well, sometimes. :-D

    • They sure do. 158 with an 8 iron is on the high end for me
    • Went back to controlling my knees. That part was getting a bit sloppy when I worked on my backswing. Right hip didn't slide or gain internal rotation. I would just rotate back and around and the left knee would be in a bad spot. Really focusing now on keeping my left knee very stable and straighter in the backswing. I can't go back to the old pattern of overturning the hips. I was returning to my old pattern to time my downswing. Turn forever.  Left knee controls both knees and hips, acting as an anchor. Feel like it straightens a bit.   Hinge sooner and faster. Not in a way that sends the hands out and flips the club over. I still noticed when the hands get to A2.5, the hands would want to flip over and flatten the club out a ton.  Still trying to figure out how to roll the forearms a bit open and not just roll the club inside a ton.  Figure out the timing to get the hands down. Still getting a bit of right elbow collapsing in the downswing because the arms are too high when I turn. Everything is happening sooner now. If the hips are controlled, the backswing is shortened. Because it is shortened I don't know when to get the hands down and I just turn because the downswing is a go.  Very slow (50%) swings are decent.
    • Distances look fine, no?
    • Day 207-12 Wider backswing and arm reconnecting in downswing. Did a much better job with proper wrist movements through downswing today.
