We never played 18 at my school. I usually shot 38-40.(par 36) on the front and 39-40 on the back. I guess I lowered it considerably.

PS: Erik gimme a break Av. Lakes and WW are tough.

I'm a complete newbie and haven't established a handicap yet but ... I began playing golf for the first time in June and shot 96 to 104 in my first 8 rounds and 83 to 97 in my last 7 rounds.

It was encouraging enough that I recently had a club fitting and got an instructor (first one) for the off-season.

N/A at the start of the year (probably around a 25+), 20.6 now.

I must say, the fact that I have obtained a handicap is forcing me to get better. No more mulligans means working to hit good shots all the time!

I seemed to struggle every time out with a different part of my game, but I noticed that my last three rounds I was starting to develop some memory for the good swings. I'm really looking forward to the 2008 season!

Laws of golf :
LAW 3: Brand new golf balls are water-magnetic. Though this cannot be proven in the lab, it is a known fact that the more expensive the golf ball, the greater its attraction to water.

LAW 8: Topping a 3-iron is the most painful torture known to man.

I started around an 18 and finished the season at a 12.1. I am looking at cutting that in half for next season. Short game is going to get some serious work over the winter and next season.

I started playing golf last May. Pitch and Putt first and mostly Par 3 (good ones) courses up until now. I went on regoular courses only 10 times or so loosing many shots (and balls) with the Driver.

On par 3 courses (with full size holes/greens etc.) I now break 80 quite regularly (73 my best so far). Unfortunately now that I would feel like measuring my golf on regular courses, weather is bad. I am curious to see how a 19 over on par 3 course translates on a full size one.

I didn't actually have an official handicap at the start of 2007. However, as i was just picking up the golf clubs, i was considerably bad. I would be thinking about a 42 or 43 which is obviously maxxed out anyway. Now, i am sitting at a 30.0 however after having a good round last week and hitting 6-under, that should drop further.

    • I don’t understand why this concept is hard for people. If the ball is lost, it is lost. It doesn’t matter where they think it should be, or whether they feel like it should be lost. The bottom line is they don’t have a ball in play. I play with some people that will just drop with one stroke (if they even take a stroke at all). Frankly, I don’t care since it’s not a competition, but if they go bragging at the bar later that they shot “85” because I will call them out on it every time.
    • I played in Open Qualifying about 25 years ago. I got to the last hole - I shan't share my score, but it wasn't good. It's a long uphill par 4 with the clubhouse just long left of the green. The clubhouse is out of bounds. I hit my second shot left and it got a firm bounce. Get up there and the clubhouse has a patio. Between the patio and a grass is a little channel filled with pebbles. In that channel is my ball. Channel is in play, but hardly ideal. About 8 inches behind my ball also in the channel is a sprinkler head. So I asked an official who happened to be on the patio whether I got relief or not. He had me set up to it and take a backswing. My club hit the sprinkler head (harder than I would have liked). He asked me to do it again (side note - WTF?) and I hit the sprinkler again. He begrudgingly gave me relief and I dropped it on the grass, pitched on the green and missed from about 8 feet. Holing it would have allowed me to break a certain score threshold I'd rather not flirt with. Following year, I played same course, same event and I played a LOT better. I birdied 17 to go back to even par for the day. Friend of mine told me it looked like even was playing off for last spot, but birdie on 18 would get me through (this was local qualifying, so through to final qualifying). I hit my drive in the heather right, went for it from there and pulled it heather left and wound up making double to not be in the play off (which wound up being about 8 people for 2 spots). But I digress - anyway, as I walked off 18 green I walked over to the patio where the scorers were and noticed that they had painted a white line on the grass next to that Channel, so they fixed my issue from the previous year, albeit in a way that would have been much more detrimental to my score.
