Same here, except not NEARLY as many GIR. What's it like to be one of those players with a putting average below 30? Are they those guys over on the putting green while I hit 4 buckets of balls?

LOL I always look at those guys like they are stupid or something. For the life of me I can not putt or chip. I just like to hit full shots at the range.

I manage to hit less than half of the greens in regulation. I think that's a sign of poor iron play. Basically brought about by lack of distance and consistency. Same with the driver and 3 wood. While putting isn't that much of a strong suit, my wedge play around the green is what always gives me a shot to save par.

Definitely my semi-short game from about 55 to 115 yds. Near the green is spotty and from outside of 125 I probably approach to the green less than 25% of the time out to 160 yds. Over 160, maybe 10-15% GIR.

Jammer 59:
Great phrase "semi-short game" . Never heard that before but you are right . There is a different set of skills necessary from here (c/w around the greens).

Putting should be a catagory by itself, I think.

My putting is currently the best part of my game. especially distance control. I need to practice the rest of my short game to become more consistant day in and day out.

My driving is controled, my long irons, hybrids are ok, my mid irons are ok, I like to practice from 100 yards, especiall from 50 yards and in.

Does anybody know how to change your name?

Semi short huh? lol Thats the area I need to work on. I think what I really need is a gap wedge.

For me inside 50 yds I'm pretty good, for my experience level. Yesterday my playing partners threw back 4 pitches or chips to within 3 or 4 ft of the pin. Still didn't break 100 though.

without a doubt, 30 yards and in. The wedges I use are a big help.

I really don't have a "long" game as most people would define it. A 600 yard par 5 would take me a good drive, a good 3 wood and then I would still have a 140-180 yard shot to the green and about 1/2 of the time I will be on a par 5 in 3. I love the huge par 5 greens!! The rest of the time I would usually have a chip and short putt for par. I am always happy to get par on a par 5 and usually expect a 5 or 6.

I will hit 80% of par 3s and birdie about 1/3. I always expect a chance at a birdie and at worst a par. For some reason I always seem to have an easy par putt on a par 3 even if I miss the green.

My GIR on most par 4s is now about 50% and I birdie about 1/3. I expect to par these also.

My worst shot now is the one the pros seem to love, the 100-110 yard wedge (most short, very high shots) and short par 4s with small greens are usually bogeys. On my course the rough is 4" bermuda and very thick and I have problems with short shots to small greens; they need to be flops, not chips. I could do these shots without any hesitation 40 years ago, but no longer.

The strong part of my golf game is my short game. Once I get around the green I play pretty good. Driving and iron shots 170+ yards are the worst part of my game by far.

My problem is not that I lack a good, short, mid or long game but the fact that one is always ordinary even if the others are going well.

    • Day 14:  I hit a bucket with my 7i and driver, didn’t hit my 7 well but my driver was good.  Played my first “real” 9 holes.  Sure, I had a few mulligans but I kept score.  Lost two balls in the water.  Had to chip from the edge of the water and did pretty good, just rolled too far past the hole.  Par was 33 and I wasn’t double but  I was closer to it than I would have liked.  I had a bogey on 9 so that ended it on a sweet note for me.
    • Day 134 - Had a tournament today, played poorly. Same as yesterday where the driving was great, but the second shots were awful. Need to dial that in tomorrow so I don’t finish DFL.
    • Day 313: range session. Worked on my feel for getting my hips more open/rotated at impact. Then did a stack session.
    • Shot a +1 73 today. Pretty pleased with the round even though it could have been 3-4 strokes lower without hitting it much different. 1 topped tee shot, a thinned wedge over the green from 40yds, and 2 putts that hung on the lip all could have made this a phenomenal round. 4 birdies total. Had an interesting back 9, 3 birdies, 3 pars, 3 bogeys and a penalty stroke. Birdied 1 and 18 so that was a fun way to start and end the round.
