Have any of you ever attended a golf tournament for all 4 days?    Was it exhausting?   Was it too much?

The reason I ask is because as of now, you can buy a weekly pass to the Players Championship for $165.   For me, living in Jacksonville, the tournament is right here.   I've often attended, but only for one day, or maybe a practice round.   Never for a whole week.

So my question is, have any of you ever attended a golf tournament for an entire week, and if so, how did that go for you?   Was it like buying too big of a meal?   Did it seem worth it?

I've worked as a volunteer for a few US Opens.  Volunteers are usually expected to work 4 days, a total of 20 to 30 hours.  We had a badge good for the entire week, including practice rounds.  I can't say it was too much, but we didn't spend a lot of extra time at the course.  We were staying within walking distance, so I could go up for just an hour if I wanted to, and I did that a couple of times on my off days before I went and played golf.

So do I have advice for you?  probably not, every person is different, and I think it would be different if you were staying at home, and driving to a lot and getting on a bus to the course.  You're not likely to go for a short time.  I specifically do remember that the last few holes get REALLY crowded towards the end of Sunday, so its really hard to see much.  If your week pass includes practice rounds, and the price isn't too bad, you may want to do it.  Practice rounds are much more low-key, less crowded, and it was interesting to see how the players prepare.  If you decide to go ahead, you should try not to feel trapped into going every to "get your money's worth."   Go and watch as much as you want, and get home to watch the end from a spot where you can see it all, in front of your TV.

Ive done 3 days at an lpga event. It was hot in June, and I drank most of the days so I would call the day more like 10:30-7. Slept like a baby each night because of all of the walking.

It would be too much for me--If I were to spend 6-8 hours on a golf course four straight days, I'm going to PLAY!  Also you don't get to see a lot of golf at events (or watching broadcasts these days, it seems).  Benefits of going multiple days at TPC would be you could spend an entire day on the 17th, which would be cool, and you could spend a lot of time at the range.  Watching tour pros hit lazer beams one after another on the range is fascinating--you really see how good they are.  But even still, that's only two days.

You could buy the pass and go Thu/Fri, then sell it for the weekend to avoid the really big crowds.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
