My concern with this article is that PGA Tour players are hitting shorter irons than amateurs from 150-200 yards. Obviously they will hit a higher GIR. I would like to see it more related to percentage of time they have that shot. Let's say hypothetically PGA tour players have 175 yards 25% of the time and hit a 7 iron on average.

I contest that first amateurs should average hitting their 7 iron the same amount or less per round than PGA tour players. Maybe one of the tips in the article is to pick the right tees not to have to hit the 5 iron more often than their mid to short irons.

Also that they look at the GIR for the 7 iron versus saying 175 yards. An amateur's 7 iron is not going 175 yards.

i think correlating more towards what club amateurs actually hit is a better way to look at it.

Yes, improving your long game GIR is a good way to decrease scores.

That's why they are the pro's! Good amateurs or 80 shooters can find a fairway here and there because it's 60 yards wide and has loads of forgiveness however greens are small and approach shots get killed by poor yardages and the wind. Pro's shoots lights out or just ok and save a bunch of pars it's what they do no surprise. This article proves however that amateurs need to hit more 7-8-9 irons on the range vs hybrids and drivers.
