I am currently playing off a handicap of around 6-7 and am looking at purchasing a new set of irons. I usually hit a straight ball flight with a medium trajectory and my 5 iron travels 175-190 yards. I can usually hit the centre of the clubface so I don't need an incredibly forgiving clubhead.

The clubs that I am interested in are Mizuno's MP-57 and MP-60 as well as Titleist's 735CM and 695CB .

Which one of these irons do you think is best for me or do you have any other suggestions.

i can personally say that the mp 57's and 60's are outstanding choices..
i never fell for the mizuno feel, but both are excellent irons, they both have some forgiving features, which, honestly, everyon needs..there really isnt a reason to be playing pure blades..

as for the titleists,i would say the 735's would be a better choice. As before they have a wee bit more forgivng, and still retain that tileist feel.

other options could definetly be the srixon, i706, (or something like that), the mizuno mp 33, or mp 30,s, ping s59's or the i 10's..

Buy a muscle back iron and the shinny chrome. Titleist makes a great set Mizuno also does, what shafts are you considering? Project X?

Nice problem to have, trying to decide what irons to buy

Not sure which shaft I should buy, probably just the S300's. I have never hit the Project X shaft, how does it differ to the S300 or R300.

The Project X shaft are used by Phil Mickelson, Appleby, and other tour players. I don't know too much about the characteristic of the shaft, but I like to learn more myself. I know that they are lighter weight than the Dynamic Gold shaft.

Dynamic Gold R300 = 127 grams
Project X 5 = 115 grams

Project x comes in frequency rating for stiffness,

5.0 regular
5.5 stiff

Check them out on Ebay under Project X or go to the web site under Royal Percision Shaft, they also make rifle shafts.

The first reply is what i would agree with as well, although the 735 are quite nice and very forgiving as well, with a classic titleist look and feel.

Hi Beach Golfer:

I would recommend you expand your list of choices to include more forgiving irons. I know this isn't what you want to hear, so I'll answer your question, then expand a bit more...

I believe the Mizuno choices are a bit better than the Titleist, but the best way to choose between them is to try to play a round with a set of each. You can ask a pro to have a sales rep leave you a demo set and you can test them. Don't hurry and don't choose one simply from 20 hits on the range, if you can help it.

But I would not restrict myself to "players" irons. I would see a pro and let him or her watch you hit a bucket of balls, and then have them suggest what type of iron they think would be best. If you have a very hard swing and hit the ball very high, players' blades might be good for you. If your natural swing hits a low shot, you may be better off with game improvement irons of some type.

Game improvement clubs are not restricted to mid and high handicap golfers. Many touring pros use game improvement club heads. I am close friends with a Callaway regional sales rep here in the US, and he loves to tell the story of a short-statured club pro who ordered a set of Big Bertha Irons, the most game improvement iron in the Callaway line. My friend thought the pro was abusing his privilege of getting irons at reduced cost, and was going to give the irons to a friend or relative. After all, what pro would use Big Berthas? Well, 6 months later the pro in question made it to the finals of the National Club Pro Assistants Tournament here in the US, using the Big Berthas. My friend asked the pro about it, and he said that he liked the ball flight he got with them, and felt the extra forgiveness helped him.

If a professional golfer with this much talent believes forgiveness helps him, I think it can help a 6 hcp golfer, too.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck with your purchase.

My friend that is a 3 handicap golfer I play with every week play Callaway big bertha irons and he hits everything solid, infact he has graphite shafts also.

I think the majority of the pro's are using some type of cavity irons, Phil was using the Callaway tour X which is cavity irons in the beginning of the year, If I am not mistaken.

One thing that I must say is that I am only 16yrs old and so I am continually improving and my handicap is on the way down. If have only been playing for just ovet two years and so I am looking for an iron that will still suit me in a few years time when my handicap will be much lower.

Go to a golf pro shop who specializes in club fitting . Ask them if they have access to the 06 Titleist 660 Blades . If they do then you are in luck as these are one of the best irons that can be purchased for a fraction of the original cost ( USD 1,100) . Try hiiting irons that have Project X shafts in S flex . If you like thee feel of these shafts then order a set in 7.0 ( Tour S Flx ) . Another Set to consider is the 07 Cobra Carbon CB irons . I have tried these and it is easy to do draws and fades with these clubs . I plan on getting me a set this Xmas . Will probably install shafts that are found in the Honma Beres . I love the feel of Japanese made shafts . Kinda expensive but well worth it .

I would tend to point you toward something lighter, and eaasier to handle.

Ideas include Dynamic Gold SL (Superlight)
Nippon NS Pro 950 (97-100 grams per shaft)
Finally, graphite is not a bad option these days, such as Aldila NV 105, or Graphite Design YS Iron.

Lots of options out there!

Good Luck!

You've already got the driver, time to hit the irons! If I were to start over my set would be as follows:

Apex Plus 3-7 iron with Apex 8-E (PW)

I haven't done much in the way of expirimenting with shafts. Have hit S300 and now have Rifle 5.5. Still on the hunt for something that knocks my socks off, probably try some Project X next.

Mizuno MP-67!!!!!!!

I'm going to go out on a limb with this one.

If you're that good of a ball striker you don't need the MP-57.

If you are a great ball striker already, you can play just about anything. If you don't want to spend a ton of money but want one of the best clubs made, take a look at these.

The Mizuno MP-29s are arguably one of the best forged clubs every made. These are basically brand new and half of what you would pay for a new set of blades. Saving $400 goes a long way, especially if you're 16.

I would suggest looking at Ben Hogans. I know they aren't common these days and not well supported by its past parent...but they are truly wonderful clubs. I wish that Callaway (the current owner of the brand) would revitalize the marketing. But beyond marketing...they are in a class in itself.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
