I have a 56* oil can, 60 degree lob and 68 degree lob which i bought when i started playing golf, almost never use it anymore. I also had alot of thought before i bought my 56* wether it should be 56 or 54. And i also feel the huge difference between a wedge from the set and a real wedge.

Recently, it's been a love/hate relationship with my Cleveland RTG wedges. I can't seem to do anything with my 56. Frankly, I don't think it's the club's fault...

I switched it out to my RAC 55* cavity back. I can hit it farther but with nearly zero feel around the greens.

I'm thinking of taking it back out and replacing it with my RTG Diadac 53*.

So...
PW: 45*
AW: 50*
SW: 53*
LW: 60*

I'm just not digging that gap within my sand and lob wedge...

  • 7 years later...

this is an old thread but hopefully people will see it.

Ive been playing a 60 and 55 for a while. just ordered myself and mizuno mp-t4 52, which i desparately needed to mend the huge gap from my 47.75 degree pitching wedge, to my 55 degree sand waedge. Trying to hit those in-between shots was just too difficult so we'll see how this 52-55-60 setup works for me. was thinking about moving the 55 to a 56 to make it an even degree change throughout, but i will see how this holds up and then make that decision.

46* PW  135ish yards

50* GW  125 ish

- both Berthas

56* SW 105ish

60* LW 80ish

-both Volkey Spin milled.

I go back and forth taking my 60* out. Sometimes I find I can do the same thing with the 56*, but sometime I like being able to hit a full 80 yard shot, instead of a 3/4 swing with the 56*.

I have a volkey 54* that I can swap for the 56, but the 54* never felt as versatile as the 56*

I usually start every year by establishing a a wedge set up that works, but as the warm weather hits and I make better contact I end up switching.

From my Nike Vapor Speeds, I have a 44ª PW and 49ª AW.

Add in Cleveland CG14 wedges: 54ª and 58ª (reshafted with KBS Tour Wedge R.flex, 110 grams).

In a season here and there, I dropped the 54 + 58 in favor of a 56ª (either CG14, or a Callaway 56/13 C-grind).

I use a modified Pelz plan for the partial wedges (20 yards and out), and the four wedges - PW through LW - helps me a lot inside 100 yards. I'm getting better in my scrambling. In today's round on a tight course, I put a half wedge and 3/4 wedge inside two feet. Just need more consistency - I tend to overcook partial wedges late in the round.

I found I can tolerate a distance gap between 5i and 4H better than going with only three wedges.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I game 4 wedges.  45* PW, 50* UW, 54* SW, and a 58* LW.  The PW and UW are fitted ping G25 Black dot +1/2 inch with gold grip.  The SW and LW are Ping Glide Wedges standard sole.  These are also fitted Red dot +1/2 with gold grip.  They are sweet when I open them up to use the bounce from both grass or sand.  I am working on flighting them for 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full swing.  I haven't found a place to do it right yet so I am keeping notes on the course.

My current wedges:

PW - 45*

AW - 50* both are TM Rocketbladez and website confirms lofts

Vokey 54-11 M Grind

Vokey 58-08 M Grind

Distances:

PW = 105 - 110

AW = 95 - 100

54 = 85 - 90

58 = 75 - 80

Anything inside 75, and I try to stay OUT of that range, I use the 58.

Also will use anything up to 8-iron and down to the 58 to pitch and run from 40 yards out.

Always use the 58 to fly over anything bad like a bunker or otherwise.

My long game is planned to get me to my 'comfort-zone' wedge range and full swings from 110 to 75 yards.  Certainly don't mind hitting longer clubs, but you asked about wedges only.

Took me a few tries to get wedges that worked well for me.  Actually call the guys at Vokey and stumbled upon a chap who was quite helpful with the lofts, bounce and grind (most important feature, IMO) based on the type of conditions I play in a northern climate.

    • True.  Scotty is not playing the field (so to speak), he’s happily married (best we can tell), and seems to have the personality to kind of ignore all the hoopla.  The strange thing with Scotty is it seems he can’t crack the code to have the love of the crowd - - he’s definitely cracked the code to winning everything in sight.  Albeit the bizarre situation where he got arrested, but remember how that all went down, the guy reached in and punched him in the face (I believe), and Scotty seemed to take it all very very low key.  Evidence?  Open your eyes, look at the results, look at the trends.  There’s 15 years of evidence! Phil total cowboy?  Hadn’t quite heard it put that way - I guess you’re talking about the gambling?  or the move to LIV?  In any case, a very different type of scenario for Phil.  I’d say that Phil optimized his talent and probably got as much out of his career he could.  If anything, Phil was not so great physically for quite a while, but he trimmed down and extended his career
    • You don't know that for a fact.  You can't even provide evidence that supports the factors you listed out.
    • Tiger buffing up hurt his career as well.  Tiger could have should have won 8-10 Masters and 100 tournaments.  He started the insane workout pump up buff out craziness whilst hanging out with the military guys, Rangers or Seals?  Hey that’s what he wanted to do, but it definitely hurt his career, especially right during his prime. Same thing with Rory.  He could have should have won several Masters by now. Both Tiger and Rory, they have incredible talent, and their talent helped them to be the best players of their generations.  I’m just saying they could’ve won even more if not for the factors I’ve listed out.
    • Phew... lol
    • Phil M was (is?) was a total cowboy in his day but served him well at the Masters it seems.
