If you took a push cart onto the tee box at the course I play on there really wouldn't be room to swing a club or anything else.

I can remember when I was much younger (in my 20's), that the pro at the public course I was a member at would lose his mind if you put your carry bag on the tee.

This is pretty much standard in Europe: no carts on tee boxes and never take them between sand traps and greens, or on the fringe of any green. The only good reason I can think of for not pushing carts between bunkers and greens is that the area between them is often narrow, so it would channel all weight and traffic through this one spot and could result in damage to that particular area of turf. I don't generally feel impeded by this, you just have to look ahead and work out which path to take (similar to checking where the next tee is and leaving your cart on that side of the green).

And yet a 300 lb golfer is allowed to walk in this area.

The muni out here are open game .  No greens and traps. Even the fringe is ok. Heck the old timers and regulars park the cart next to the green like there parking at a strip mall.  

 Really don't see the damage 3 small wheels could do to a tee box that's worse then some hacker taking 8 practice swings and removing 3 cubic yards of grass and dirt from the tee box. 

 

 Don't know about most of you, but I play much better walking a course.
