It was the best of scores... it was the worst of scores...

This season has been ridiculously frustrating for me so far.  I've been on the course a total of 11 times since January 1st, including 5 times to play a few 9 hole rounds.

My scores have been wildly inconsistent... even more so than years past.

I began the year with a higher-than-average (for me) 98 in early January.  I then didn't get back to the course, but did a lot of practice in my garage and at the range, until the first weekend in February.  I shot an abysmal 117 during the first tournament of the year.  I put the clubs away for a week and then vowed to get better for the next tournament.  I went out and play a 9 hole round where I shot an ugly 56 at a not-so-difficult course.  The following weekend, I played in the next tournament and posted a 110.

I was contemplating selling my clubs at that point.  Instead, I went to work and played a series of 4 rounds on the 9 hole course over the next few weeks in preparation for the next tournament on the schedule.

On 3/2... I shot an average 47.  On 3/4... I posted an outstanding 40.  On 3/9... somehow I lost all the good feeling I had an posted a 51.  Finally, on 3/10... I shot another ugly 56.  All of those 9 hole rounds at the same course.  On 3/12, at a course I absolutely love, another 98 at a tournament.  I had started sh*nking everything with my wedges and was so far inside my own head I couldn't find the way out.

The following Friday, I went to a local goat-track that offers a decent test and somewhat resembles the course I'll be playing in a tournament tomorrow.  I shot a 95, going 50 on the back (which was the first side I played) and 45 on the front.  I felt a little better about that final 9 hole stretch.  Tuesday of this week (just 4 days later), I went back to the same course to get in some more practice.  Everything was on that day and I somehow managed to post a new personal best of 81, shooting 43 on the front and 38 on the back (also a new personal best).

I've literally had a fluctuation of 36 strokes between my best and my worst rounds, all in a 45 day span.

Just as you can flip a coin and have it land heads five times in a row, you can line up a bunch of bad or good scores in a row, too. You're still roughly the same golfer.

What's your plan of attack?

That thread only has one post from you in it with no real signs of work on the things recommended.

I've actually used the information in that thread and made some pretty significant changes... just forgot to update it.  I'll have to go there and do an update.

My grip is now much stronger with both hands and I've worked on coming more from the inside and eliminating the over-the-top move.  I think that's where a lot of my higher scores are coming from is the fact that nothing is feeling natural to me yet.

I haven't actually seen my swing from the front in awhile, so I'll have to video that and see if I'm still swaying as much.  I'd guess I probably am somewhat, but I'm not positive.

Plan of attack is to keep working on the same things I've been working on until it begins to feel natural.  It took awhile to get the grip to feel more natural, but now I TRY to grip the club the way I did forever (as shown in that thread) and it feels really, really bad.

Thanks for reminding me about that thread, Erik.  I'll go back and update it this weekend!
