My wife and I got a recall notice for 2007-2011 Honda CR-Vs. Apparently the airbags can become over-pressurized AND not only burst or smack people too hard (or something), but they can also project shards of metal at a high enough speed to severely injure or kill people.

And the parts for the recall repairs will not be available until summer 2016, so Honda is offering (via their dealerships) either to give you a loaner (rental) vehicle or to reimburse you if you do the same on your own.

My wife and I have already called and our dealership is handling all of this stuff on Monday. Needless to say we are not going to drive the CR-V anywhere in the meantime. In our younger years, and before my wife was involved in a collision (not her fault) a few years ago in the Subaru Forester, we might "risk it" and say "we don't get in accidents," but we a) have a kid, and b) were in an accident, so… no, we're not risking it.

Anyway, just a heads up if you currently have a 2007-2011 Honda CR-V. Check your mail and/or call your dealership.

We got the same recall for our Subaru Legacy 2008)...apparently those airbags were installed in a LOT of vehicles. Ours is only for the passenger side, so we are driving it in the meantime when we don't both need to get in the car.

They didn't offer us the loaner option in the letter; I may call them and ask.

I have a 2006 CRV and had to do the same recall last year, we opted to let the dealer handle the rental and it wound up taking close to 2 months before the part got replaced, the rental charges were almost $4000.00. The real delay was the original part they were going to replace wound up being defective also so they kept the car until the 2nd part arrived, it was the inflator that had to be replaced.

If you own a 2004-5 Honda Element, the airbag has a similar issue, but not the shards of metal part. I received a notice earlier in the year and they already have the parts for replacement. Took me a day and they gave me a rental car for a few hours while I waited to get everything changed.
