I am going to purchase a new set of irons in the next couple of months and I am undecided on which shafts I should get in them. At the moment I have R300 shafts in my 3 and 4 irons while I have regular flex True Temper Firesticks in my other irons. I am looking for a slightly higher ball flight in my long irons and so I am wondering if Project X shafts are for me.

PS: The irons I am going to purchase will probably be Mizuno MP-57's.

In the bag:

driver Big Ben CS3 9.5º
3-wood 906F4 15.5º
hybrid rescue mid 19ºirons: MP-60 3-PWwedges vokey spin-milled 54º and 60ºputter tracy IIball Pro V1

From what I've seen they launch high but then flatten out and penetrate. Feel is also drastically different from other shafts so I suggest you try them before you buy them...

As supercow mentions it would be good if you could try them out, yes the feel is different. Also they are heavier than your current shafts so that may be an issue. Overall the shaft is just made to perform different so I suggest that you find a fitter if possible.

The Project X and other Rifle shafts produce a higher launch with low spin, so flat yes but low no. The Dynamic Gold and other similar TT shafts produce a low launch with higher spin. I know people are in a rage for getting a high launch, low spin shaft for their driver but irons need to be treated differently.

Because many people need the added spin to maintain distance and control.

The Project X was designed for the high spin player, looking to reduce lift. That is why they are popular on tour, ie davis love, baddely, villegas.

Try this shaft, this is one of Mizuno's best steel shafts. Nippon NS Pro 950, see Mizunousa.com.

Only weighs 97-100 grams, raises your ball flight some, but keeps you in control.

ALso has the benefit of being lighter. (More clubhead speed).

I have a couple questions about this shaft:

1. The Nippon NS Pro 950 has a high ball flight but how much spin does it produce? 2. I play at a windy course so will I still be able to play low punch shots with it.

I have a couple questions about this shaft:

NS 950 produces quite a bit of spin, assuming you make solid contact with a descending blow. It's typically very popular among players who have a smooth tempo and are shallow through impact taking little to no divots.

The added spin comes not from the shaft itself, but from the flexible tip which increases dynamic loft at impact. If you can hit a low punch shot now, these shafts will not stop you from doing so. Again, best advice is to get to a demo day and try them out for yourself.

Thanks for that information. The shafts sound good and it is really good that you can hit the ball low. The only problem is that you say they are best for people who take little to no divots but I usually make quite large divots so maybe they are not perfect for me.

That said, they still might suit me so I will have to go to a demo day or to a golf shop and see if I can find a set that I can try out.

      I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

      Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
