Ok... I will look for the book. However, I am not sure it is what I look for.

I am a beginner, and getting better with swing, ball fly etc. Something I find very difficult is to have a tempo.

I read some people think about some songs, etc.

Do you have any drill to get started focusing on tempo?

Thanks for the tip. This will give me something to work on this winter. Maybe this old dog can still learn new tricks. Everyone wants to lower their handicap regardless of what it is.

My favorite is chanting AN-NIK-KA in my backswing and SOR-EN-STAM in my downswing. And picturing her tempo while I do it.

I've used this under tournament pressure and it works for me. YMMV!

Actually I was just posting my swing tempo tips on another site earlier today.

I like to address the ball with the feeling that there is NO feeling in my hands or arms but the sensation of the club only. I try to allow this nothingness permeate my body all the way into the ground. When swinging this way, I only sense the club. If you will do this especially when making the downswing transition, you will find your ball striking will improve greatly and after you get confidence, its unbelievable how accuracy and distance will improve.

Swinging to a phrase that kind of has a rhythm to it can be quite helpful. I use the phrase from "The Greatest Game Ever Played"

"Easy Peasey Lemon Squeezy"

Also if you have the common problem of rushing your swing at some point, over-emphasizing not rushing can be very helpful. I often tend to rush at the top of my swing and I learned to hit the ball with a second pause at the top.

i like to say, "oh crap, where will this go?" on the backswing, and "no one knows" on the downswing.

really helps my confidence.

Those who posted phrase suggestion - what is backswing, downswing?

I'm not sure that I understand your question. But the best analysis of this approach that I am aware of is Dr. Carey Mumford's Clear Key Golf (

www.clearkeygolf.com ). His approach is that you start the phrase basically as you take your set up, and repeat it throughout the swing. The concept here is both a tempo thing and a mechanism for "taking the best swing that you own" without all those mental interferences, etc. dave

The point of the book is that the backswing should take three times as long as the downswing.

I am not sure I agree with your assessment of the actual amount of time it takes to hit a golf ball is

irrelevant . Club head speed is important if one is to compress a golf ball. I feel the 27:9, 24:8, 21:7 camera frame ratios he describes in the book are relevant to swing speeds . If you get a chance watch the video portion of the CD that is in the book. Golfers have been trying to model tour professionals for a long time. Tempo is a part of the process and the pros exibit these ratios which can last anywhere from about .93 to just over 1 second in duration in the ratios mentioned above.

My question was are you using one portion of the phrase for backswing, the other for downswing, thereby timing both.

If you apply Clear Key golf principles there is more going on WRT your "CLear Key Phrase" than just timing/tempo. If you apply the principles properly you will find that the transition and impact point will tend to be at pretty much exactly the same place. But it is important that you "let it happen" rather than forcing it to happen. dave

There is quite a disparity between fast and slow pros.

Just look at Seon Hwa Lee on the LPGA tour. Her swing looks like slow motion playback. Yet her tempo is considered ideal. To 99% of golfers, clubhead speed is not important that's why we have 14 clubs in the bag. Unless of course you are talking about the rare case of a par 4 that is longer than 450 yards.

    • On the subject of teenagers in professional tournaments there is a kid (Kris Kim) who is a member of my club in England and is at my old school. He’s 16. He’s playing in the pga tour event in Texas this week. Shot 69 yesterday for T31 and is -2 today through 5 holes. T55 and on the cut line. I really hope he makes the cut. Will be awesome.    His dad I believe is a teaching pro and his mum was on the LPGA Tour for a while.
    • I have two contenders here that stick out to me: In second place, a putt to win the hole playing the 16th hole at Burnham and Berrow. Playing foursomes and the green has a big bank at the front then a flat bit and then it goes up again to a back shelf. My partner had hit our second shot onto the back shelf. We were 2up at the time and he was being a little wobbly so we didn’t want to lose the hole. Our oppo were conceded a 4 and my partner told me to just lag it down there nicely. 20 year old me meant to do that and failed. I hit it a bit hard and it was definitely going to clear the tier and probably run off the front of the green, but it hit the hole right in the middle and went in. My partner was very happy we won the hole but quite upset at my ability to follow instructions.    Number 2 is my most memorable. I was about 16 playing in the junior knockout at my club. We get to the 10th hole - long par 4 and index 2. I didn’t hit a very good drive, hit my second up about 60 yards short and pitched on to maybe 25 feet. I started walking and I got this feeling. I knew I was going to hole it. There was no doubt at all. I’ve never felt like that any other time in my life but this one putt was a certainty. It was February and the greens had been recently hollow tined so they were in awful shape. I didn’t even line it up. I hit my putt and it bumped and bounced all over the place until it went in the middle of the hole. If I could bottle up that feeling and sell it I’d be up there with Bezos and musk. Mind blowing!
    • It's strange how ONE person can be THAT much different/better/whatever than anyone else.
    • I saw a YouTube review on a bunch of ball brands and the Maxfli Tour X did very well in comparison. I bought a sleeve and found them to be excellent in feel and distance. But I’m a lousy golfer so nobody probably cares about my opinion. 😃
