Hello Everyone,

I'm looking at picking up a new set of irons. My set currently consists of:

Taylor made r15 matrix speeder 9.5 stiff shaft 9,5

Cleveland launcher 19 degree 5 wood with stiff shaft

tommy armor silverback 845cs irons. 3-pw

scotty Cameron detour putter

I golf in the high 80's low 90's consistently and I'm looking at upgrading the irons since they are nearly 10 years old. I'm 6'4 so I'm going to get fitted for the irons but I believe an extra half inch on the shaft will be perfect. I usually never hit my 3 4 or 5 irons as I'm quite consistent in the fairways with my driver and wood. Just wondering what you guys would recommend for new irons? I was thinking of purchasing them individually from 6-9 and getting a couple of wedges to help out around the greens.

Thank you.

I'm 6'4 (and a quarter) and my irons are +1" and 3.75' upright but I played recently with a guy who was taller than me (maybe 6'6) and he was fitted into regular length clubs (long arms / short legs ?).  Getting fitted (by someone who knows what they are doing) is definitely the way to go.

As for clubs I play Ping mostly because the fitting process seems to work for me but I am sure most brands now can get that right.

Agree w/ @ZappyAd  - I'm 6' 2 and, according to "static fitting charts" I should play a degree or 2 upright and 1/4 inch longer shafts but I feel most comfortable with standard lie and loft.

Getting fit can be a daunting proposition because you're looking at whatever for the fitting and then the price of brand new clubs.

What I have done in the past is buy used irons in std lie, loft and length - with the idea that I'll take them to a fitter to get adjusted after I break them in a bit.  I never do, though, because std lie, loft and length work great for me.  The theory is sound, though.

Happy shopping.

I feel like I'm hitting well with the standard loft and lie in my current irons so we will see how the fitting goes. I'm getting a club pro here to do it for me and he does the fitting for free and orders the clubs straight from the manufacturers so there is no extra charge fortunately. I'm just wondering if I should just buy the 6 iron to 9 and then a couple wedges as I Never hit the 3 or 4 irons and rarely hit a 5. Most of my longer holes consist of driver, 5wood then wedge into the green. So I don't think the 3 or 4 are necessary and I'm doubtful about the 5. What brand of clubs would you recommend for someone who shoots scores similar to mine. I already know I'm getting steel shafts in a stiff flex.

I think may current sets have a 6 or 7 through 9. Then one or more of the forged wedges are added rather than the stock PW,AW, SW. Many use hybrids rather than 3 or 4 (or 5).

The fitting may indicate a non standard length, but this could be done not only because of your height, but also your swing path. I tend to hook with a standard lie, So my prescription is 1* flat and 1/2 inch short. They will check your swing with tape and make corrections of lie and length to try to get your contact point in the middle of the club.

I was measured over 10 years ago and was thinking of getting remeasured. Obviously my swing has changed, but I wonder if my fitting will change.

I don't even think I need the hybrids. Even on a long par 5 I can easily reach greens in 3 shots with driver, 5 wood and wedge. On shorter par 5's I have hit the green in 2 many times.

Fine save money, if you can. Personally I have gaps between my 5 wood and 5 hybrid at about the 180 yard range. It is most obvious on par 3's. I can't reach with the  hybrid and am over the green with the wood. Apparently you are skilled enough to take a little off the 5 wood so that you don't hit it too far and wouldn't have that problem. If you ever need to fill the gap, so you don't have to manipulate the longer club, then you can go to an extra club.

I often fell like I too few clubs at 14. Then I won't hit a 3 wood for a week and wonder why I even carry it. With your set up, you are reasonable to think about adding an extra wedge. I carried a 64* ala Phil for a while, and days when I don't hit the 3 wood, I wish that I had it.

You did ask about which irons to look at. I have been using Callaways for quite a long time. Last year I picked up a couple XRs and really like their feel. This year, I don't know, I am going to test drive Tour Edge Exotics and see if I gain anything. Your pro will probably have recommendations following your fitting. Everything else being equal, he will know more about your swing than anyone except you. He also should know his own merchandise, and should be able to make the most reasonable recommendations for you. If he is supporting you with a free fitting, you should think strongly about supporting him.

I hit the 5 wood about 230 to 240 off the tee and about 200 to 210 off the deck but xan do that off the tee if i take some.off of it. Driver around 260 to 300 depending on conditions. My 6 iron is about 180 and it goes down about 10 yards from there each club which is why I think I'd like to add a 52 and a 56 wedge. I will definetlh be supporting the pro and he can get any brand for me as he is well known as a club fitter around here. I.agree with what you say about him kbowing my swing and picking the best irons for my budget and abilities. I really appreciate all your help. Thank you.
