This doesn't sound conducive to good scoring. The 8i is designed to hit greens with a lot of spin. You might consider picking one up?

I have an 8 iron but don't like it. Looking to replace it with a better one.

Do you have one set of irons or is it a wild assortment of different clubs?

I'm not sure what to do... I only hit the hybrid once in a while... I might be better served with dropping a couple clubs for the time being and learning to play this stupid game again... I about to go back to a stupid simple set-up, at least until I figure out the 100 yards and in.

For me my 3 Hybrid is a game changer club on 2nd shots on the par fours and fives.

You need to assess your game. I see you are using GG, and there are insights. Look at your improvement suggestions then pick clubs accordingly.

John,

Yes I have the EX9 7-wood though it has a slightly different shaft than the D and 4w... Don't know how It's gonna perform I've only hit it once...

Got to try out plenty of Tour Edge stuff today at the demo day. TE rep Jake (Dave Jacobs) was there; he's the one who set me up with the XRail FWs in 2014.

As per your recommendation in another thread, I tried out all three current irons. The EXd (distance) was OK, but with the offset and lighter shaft I pulled most of the shots.

The EXi and CB Pro irons worked out much better. I tried both with the Recoil 460 F3 65-gram R-flex shafts. But felt good, but the CB Pro seemed to give me cleaner hits. I also hit the EXi with the KBS Tour 90. I like the Recoils (hit some E9 hybrids with same shaft), but I might want something heavier than the 65 grams.

Earlier in the day, I had hit some Callaway C16 Apex (Recoil 760) and XR.Pro irons (KBS Tour.V 90).  Again, something heavier than the Recoil 460 would be better for me.

Also tried some woods. I compared my new X16 Tour with some Exotics. Jake started me out with a 45-gram Bassara A-flex shaft and 12* head. Made good contact, but I sprayed the ball and it got hung up in the wind a couple of times. Next was an Exotic E9 driver, 10*, with a Bassara R-flex. This flew better.

I then hit my X16 Tour 10.5* (set open) with 64-gram R.flex. This came off with best control, and seemed to run out better. Jake then reshafted the E9 with a 55-gram Matrix Red Tie R-flex. This setup was the best of the three E9 combos. Basically, it tied with the X16.

For a final adventure, I tried the E9 FWs you had talked about. I tried a 16.5* and a 17* Tour. The 16.5 flew OK, but the Tour was a bit stiff and hung out to the right. Then, Jake played around with head and shaft and said, "try this."

I blasted three shots, with carry almost as much as the better drivers. I took a look at what he had assembled, and it was a 15* E9 3.Long, set to 16*, with a Diamana Red x5ct S.60 R-flex. He said it was a half-inch longer than the standard 3W, and had a deeper face which would match my swing better than a standard head.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I thought of getting the CB Pro Tungsten, but decided to go with the EXi instead... I actually own the whole set (3-PW, AW, SW) just 4-PW, AW are in the bag right now.

As per your suggestion John, I came up with a "Sweet 16".

The always 12: D, 4W, 5-PW, 50°, 54°, 58°, Putter

The switch out 4. 7W or 3H, 4I or 4H... I might mess around with the other hybrids and 3-iron at the range, but that is my sweet 16

D, 4W, 7W or 3H, 4H or 4i, 5-PW, 50°, 54°, 58°, putter...

If I'm not confident in my 58°, I'll just take it out and not replace it.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
