I've been Playing Golf for: Played in high school, stopped for ~10 years, and picked up the game again a year ago
My current handicap index or average score is: 27
My typical ball flight is: High shots
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Straight shots left of target, fat shots causing inconsistent distance, also sometimes I neglect to roll my right hand over which keeps the face open.

I have been trying to develop a consistent swing that will keep my ball in play.  I've recently broke 100 and have my mind set on breaking 90 in the near future.  I have had good success in minimizing penalties by teeing off with at most a 5-iron and using no woods at all.  I am trying to adhere to Ben Hogan's 5 fundamentals and refer back to them for swing thoughts after hitting bad shots.  However, even his fundamentals are probably not meant for everyone.  I'm looking for feedback if there are any glaring problems with my swing.

Thanks for posting and welcome to The Sand Trap. Two sets of photos below show you at setup/top of back swing and setup/impact. Notice that at the top, you have drifted back. This weight shift back makes it hard to get your weight forward at impact.

At impact, your lower body has moved forward, but your head is still back.

Tor correct this, you need to work on making a centered hip turn. The thread below goes into detail on this. One thing that makes it easier is to flare your feet out 30 degrees or so at set up. That will also get your knees to point out more, which will help you stay centered.

Again, thanks for posting. When you practice these changes, do them slowly as described in this thread. Expect it to take a few weeks to master the changes.

Thank-you for the thorough analysis and response!  I can easily see how this would effect my ball flight consistency.  I will get working on making the corrections.

You can film your slow practice work and show it here too. Sometimes it helps to show that instead of just full swings.

    • Although the base rules don't make this really clear, the Player must have decided to use Unplayable Ball relief before lifting the ball.  This exact situation is discussed in the Committee Procedures section of the Rules, section 6C(8).  Section 6C addresses how to rule when a Player proceeds under a Rule that does not apply.  Note that 9.4 applies, 9.4 deals with a player moving his ball when no rule allows it.   Rule 9.4 penalizes the Player for lifting his ball when not permitted by the Rules, and requires him to replace it.  Since he dropped and played from a different place, the Wrong Place penalty applies.  As for a serious breach, that would only apply if the Wrong Place gave him a really significant advantage.  Since he could have taken Unplayable Ball relief in essentially the same spot, for just 1 penalty stroke, the Wrong Place penalty of 2 strokes is enough "punishment", there's no need to consider a DQ.
