I am an incoming freshman at St. Bonaventure University, one of the smallest Division 1 schools in the country. It has always been a dream of mine to play a D1 sport, and I would like to attempt o walk on for my sophomore season, next summer.

I played golf in high school, but wasn't too prominent, averaging scores in the mid - low 80s last fall. My love for the game has grown, and I'd challenge you to find a high school player who has read more golf books or understands golf history as well as I do.

Until last week, I hadn't played/swung in 8 months due to school and work, but in those shaky rounds I managed low 80s both times.

I have always swung easy and consistently hit fairways, along with a putting game that is as solid as anybody, because thats where I invested my time when I practiced.

My shortfall in terms of scoring has always been power, I never really had a lot of birdie/easier pars becasue I hit it so short. But miraculously over the past 8 months I picked up 30 yards simply by growing I guess, leading to mid 80s even with very poor putting.

Id like honest answers/opinions, any responses really.

The university has a golf course, so I plan on being there a couple hours a day along with being in the fitness center doing workouts that specifically help bulking/flexibility for golf. If I work at it everyday and bring myself to upper 70s consistently, do I have a shot at making the team at my small D1 school?

Sorry, this is a repeat, I didn't think  my other post went through

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
