Component Companies did, back in the early 1990s. To take advantage of the "features" of a product, and sell it at 1/3 of the price to reach more golfers.  Component Companies do it now, but that's definitely :offtopic:. If you want a more definitive answer PM me sometime.

I get that but those knock offs generally would changed the name slightly and these were not widely known in general.

Any knock off is made because you are hoping to be able to sell it for more than you could under your own XYZ brand that nobody has heard of.  Any brand with some market value will see knock offs if it is profitable to do so

Yes for like Ping, Titleist but was Tommy Armour comparable?

Provided you can sell it for more than your own unknown XYZ brand, it is worth while.  Plus, companies like Ping and Titleist are more stringent on checking for and punishing fake manufacturers.  Similar to the luxury goods manufacturers today.  Tommy Armour not so much.  Less risk and correspondingly less reward

I did a little searching around for some archive pics and info on his old clubs and all of them seem to have silver scot, oversized or titanium on them.  It is quite possible the ones you have are fakes.

Why would anyone waste time making knock offs of Tommy Armour 845s?

The only reason I can think of is the titanium. From what I've researched, the 845 Ti irons were expensive when they first were released.

That is exactly what made me suspicious. The overall look of the club, the missing "Silver Scot."
