Long story short, a check he thought he lost was voided and changed hands many times until a sports reporter found it. I think winners today still get an actual cashier's check or something physical, no? I would opt for the direct deposit option.

I watched the little segment with him and it was oddly sentimental . . obviously he has had to tell this story a *lot* of times.
