“if it works, keep it. If it doesn't get rid of it”

Simple words, not always easy to heed. I am reminded of this when I read passages in Hogan's book wherein he describes how since the age of twelve, he accumulated thoughts by observing others, trying out ideas, incorporating them into his routine, adding new ideas if they helped his progress, discarding ideas if they hindered. Also being willing to discard ideas later on that did not hold up in competition. Lately, I have become aware, that by maintaining a certain set of fundamentals and limiting the temptation of incorporating new ones, that I seem to be fairly consistent. With this in mind, I am very cautious whenever I read of a new idea or technique, not withstanding, there is always something to learn and new ideas relative to certain aspects of the short game, for example. This may sound boring to some, but it does not have to be. Rather than trying something new, just mix it up a bit in your routine, alternating clubs, make up mental games, shorten your practice time, but stick to what works.

The average golfer doesn't have much of a clue what's "right" in the end.
