Ok, so your at the range, your in a groove, all is going great, your consistently putting you pw 135. What we need to understand is that 135 is actually more like our best shot, not our average, due to the fact that we're at the range and in that groove, think about it, your hitting great and only getting it to 135, what are the odds your gonna get up to a green with only 1 shot and not in that groove and hit it great? Very slim, right? Do yourselves a favor and take the club for the yardage to the back of the green, then, if by chance you hit it great then your only at the back of the green, but odds are you won't hit it great so maybe that brings you back to center green, or at worse front green. Watch for this pattern next time you play, you will notice many players coming up short.

The range (most of them at least) is a bad place to work on your yardages.  Not only do you have the "getting in the groove" thing working against you . . you are hitting balls that vary quite a bit . .some brand new, some have the dimples worn off . .they're typically range balls to begin with, etc.

The best way I've found for us "regular guys" - ie - that don't find a pyramid of brand new pro V1s stacked up at our stall is to get a range finder and use it on the course.  Game golf, GPS, etc would all work, too . .I just happen to have a range finder.  Over time, you'll figure out what your distances are.

I've NEVER used range balls for distance work. Strictly for ball flight or working on a specific swing point. As mentioned balls at the range can vary quite a bit. Even with "new" range balls, they aren't the same quality as the perfect tour range balls.

Even using a Trackman or similar at the range can be deceiving because of the ball variation/quality. For "general" numbers it's fine.

    • Day 139: worked on putting for a while. Did the two cups drill for bead.
    • It’s winter here and time hitting at my indoor place.  This year I bought and sold a few sets so I didn’t settle in on anything. For this coming season, starting now I have a choice to make.  What set would you guys use? 1.  Nike Vapor Pro irons - They are like new, hit them some last year before I had to demo other sets.  I love them, original grips, barely used so I’m almost not wanting to use them to keep their value up.  Standard LLL and standard grips. 2. Taylormade P7TW irons - Still in the box.  Got them over a year ago but had too much to hit, never used them.  Have used a set in the past and loved them.  Ended up with my own set custom fit to me -1/4”, 1 degree flat midsize grips.  These are probably not as valuable because they are still available and they are fit to me. I hate to put the Nikes away but it makes more sense to save them than the TW’s…. I dunno….
    • Day 215 (3 Dec 24) - Another very chilly day - opted to work on easy pitches in the backyard. Worked thru the irons and wedges - focused on foot position and tempo.
    • Yes. I believe in using the same ball all of the time, including chipping and putting practice. I use the orange Callaway Supersoft.  Only $25 per dozen, and sometimes on sale for $20.
