They had the brand name and 2 of the best 10 players in the last 20 years.  Most people could do a blind study and wouldn't be able to tell the difference between most clubs anyways.

This is the thing, they didn't have the brand name for golf clubs and balls.  They had a brand name famous for shoes first, perhaps apparel second.  Obviously having Tiger selling their equipment didn't persuade enough rank and file golfers to use their gear to allow them to make a long-term go of it.  I'm not going to buy Adidas golf clubs simply because Sergio uses them.  (just picking a shoe company and a golfer, not running down either Adidas or Sergio).  The "new" companies who have succeeded at golf equipment (Taylor Made and Calloway come to mind) came to the business by making golf clubs first, not by branching out from shoes and apparel.
