I was just looking at a commercial featuring Bobby Jones Black Hybrid.  I am a long time supporter of Jesse Ortiz products and am considering a purchase. I currently have in the bag:

Driver,Big Bertha 3W (women's flex), Calloway Diablo 4H, Ben Hogan Speed Slot 5W, rest are irons 4 through SW.

My question is: which hybrid to buy?  I am thinking 21 Deg senior flex which would be a 3 iron replacement if I am correct. or should I go with Regular Flex?

One point I would like to make is that the Big Bertha 3w with GEM shaft, although I like the feel, I notice that I need to swing it a little slower for best results and also it has a wimpy sound but for the most part performs alright.

I looked at some BJ Black Hybrid reviews, and the Ortiz equipment website, but couldn't find any specs on the shafts. Our site reviewed the FWs, but not the hybrids. Another site did a Black Hybrid Review in 2014, and said Graphite Design G-Series shafts were stock (but listed no models).

I would suggest  you contact Jesse Ortiz and find the weight and model of the shafts. If the shaft is heavier, a Senior flex might work. If the shaft is lighter, an R-flex might work. (If you had data from a Mizuno shaft optimizer, it would give you clues on what shaft profile might work for  you.)

That's the problem with mail-order clubs. You don't get to test them first. I'm not sure what refunds Jesse gives if they don't work out. If I'm going to spend $200 on a club, I want hit it first.

Any chance a friend has one you can try?

----------------
Note on 3W: if you start having trouble from varying your swing tempo, try out a 4W in R-flex. The extra loft plus firmer shaft might work out nice.

according to the ad, the shaft weight for the 21 Deg is 235 g. In viewing his video, jesse actually had a "Black Beauty" in his hands. The BJ Black is more than likely this years model of the same club.  I will try and see if I can get the model of shaft. I seem to recall reading somewhere that the Bobby Jones  run a little softer. If that is so, then I should go Reg. Nobody I know has one and I do not know if any of the big box stores carry them or would let me try it out.  I will say, I love my Orlimar Hip Ti driver, although a few years old, I like the smaller head size.

took another look at the offering. They have it at a discount, and they do offer a 100% 30 day return policy. No contact info on the ad from RX Golf.  I will continue looking for the Ortiz web site, or if you happen to have it, would you give me the link?

HJ, I saw the ads also, and the 235 grams is the weight of the head. The shaft weights are not listed in the ads I saw.

haha...yes, I realize that now.  DUH.  I sent them an email requesting model, of the shaft. Never-the-less, I will be going with the regular flex should I decide to buy. The lie angle is adjustable as well, not that one would want to once they decided. Only 2 choices, std, and flat. The prices are the same if purchased on Bobby Jones Site. Thanks again.

@WUTiger here is copy of the emal response I got from Bobby Jones

Hello,
Thank you for your email.

Hybrids use players series graphite shaft

Made by Rapport. They make shafts for mostly Japanese companies like Mauruman.

The Graphite Design shafts are set for the following speeds:

95+ mph = Stiff

80 to 94 = Reg

Below 80 = Senior

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,
Christine

OK,pulled the trigger. Order placed. They also gave me access to several videos on how to use hybrid. Most pretty basic stuff: Hit like 7 iron, downhill lie, uphill lie, ball above feet, ball below feet, hitting out of rough, fairway bunker, greenside chips, adjusting like angle. Anybody curious, check back with me in a week or so and I will give you my opinions. An older model has been officially reviewed on TST, but not sure if it was a hybrid, or fairway wood.

First impressions.  Looks good, feels good out of the box.  Gonzo Like It!

I like the triangular head design, with weight located behind the apex. The curved sole is a bit different than most hybrids and is a selling point along with the "cup" design face as opposed to an insert. The dull mat black finish is quite appealing with minimal graphics. At address it is easy to spot the ball and you get a clear view of alignment. The shaft is 58g and I chose the regular flex. It is a Graphic Designs Shaft Players Series JS. The loft of the head is 21 deg. It has an adjustable lie angle offering standard and 2 deg flat. Simply use the supplied allen wrench to loosen the head, rotate the shaft, re-tighten. I tried both settings but did not notice any appreciable difference. This may change when I get a chance to try it out on the range. I am not a professional reviewer, and can only state that it feels great and has a nice balance to it. I like the solid sound it makes and it appears to be fairly forgiving on off center hits giving it a respectful M.O.I. and owing to the construction, a high C.O.R.  The first thing I noticed was the face reminds me of the old Orlimar Miraged Tri-Metals made famous by Jesse Ortiz, which stands to reason as he is now affiliated with Bobby Jones Golf. The only disparaging thing I can think of is there is a label at the end of the shaft that states "components made and assembled in China", but I would wager, that is not all uncommon these days. (Don't tell The Donald).

    • It sucks to carry around a lot of water, but ideally it should be way more than we think.  I buy those gallon jugs of water and hang them from my pushcart when I walk. I agree with the electrolytes as well. You don't just sweat out water, but you lose electrolytes as well.
    • A 2010 study from the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research compares the effects of different pre-round stretch routines for competitive golfers. Active Dynamic Warm-up: Swing Medicus driver, hit 3 shots each with selected clubs. Passive Static Stretches: Various athletic stretches such as hamstrings, chest stretch and reverse trunk twist. The subjects were collegiate golfers with a HDCP index of 5 or less who engaged regularly in strength and fitness routines. All golfers had two test days: one with active dynamic (AD) warmup, a second with AD followed by static stretches (SS). The results were then compared, within golfers and across golfers. For performance testing after the warmups, golfers hit three driver shots at time 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes after the warmup. The study shows that static stretch formats produced poorer performance outcomes in the four measures shown in Table 5, which shows Time Zero results. The performance deficits under the PSS protocol decreased over time. Some suggestions on why the passive protocol was tied to lower performance than the active protocol: The passive stretches routine induced excessive range of motion,  basically producing wobbles in the golf swing. Other research indicates that the stretching produced slack in the tendons, lessening the amount of muscle force that could be transferred into the shot. One caveat: The study had good scientific controls and balancing of treatments (test routines). This was, however, an exploratory study and raises as many questions as it answers. Also, although the study was done back in 2010, it is still cited as a primary work in recent reviews. A quick online search did not reveal any follow-ups on the study. For those interested, the study PDF is below. PassiveStretchGOLF.pdf
    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
